If you have never shot a suppressed 9mm handgun I would suggest you do before you purchase a suppressor. While they are easily shot without hearing protection they are no where near what hollywood portrays and several folks are often disappointed when they hear one for the first time. The only one that gets close to "hollywood" quiet is s .22LR suppressor firing subsonic ammo. Just my opinion, YMMV.
A top quality, 9mm suppressor with subsonic ammo is STUPID QUIET!
The process/paperwork to get is suppressor is actually pretty simple - you just have to be patient (it takes the ATF a minimum of 90 days to process/approve the paperwork).

As CAR-AR-15 said, shoot them first. If you expect them to go "fffffttttt" they won't.
Also, not only shoot them, but stand back while someone else shoots them to see the real affect.
I have one that I use on my Uzi and I wasn't entirely happy with, until I heard what it sounded like from 5 to 10 feet away.
The other key is subsonic ammo. you can use supersonic, but you still hear the "crack" of the bullet.
There are plenty of guys on this board that can help you thru the process. It is relatively painless.

Most of the 180 and higher weight 40 ammo is already sub sonic. I have a 40 cal suppressor on a Springfield Armory XD if you want to see what it sounds like.
