I'll throw you another one Evan. I have a buddy that may still have a few used 14" Benelli's with pistol grip stocks and he could get you into one of those for well under $1,000 including the tax stamp. Most likely enough left over to pay for the Surefire forend.

I have a little over 2 grand in my SBS and it is one of my two most favorite guns (it and my suppressed Browning Buckmark .22). It's worth doing, especially for your purposes. However, make sure you do it right the forst time and plan to keep it. Sell it and you're throwing away the $200 stamp, plus it will bring less than you have in it because most people automatically assume the NFA stuff has been abused. It's a limited market too, so you have to price accordingly.

This. A dept. owned NFA item can be "retired" with the officer upon retirement, but it cannot be transferred to anyone else. Upon the officer's death, the gun must be returned to the dept. or destroyed per ATF rules.
You only live once, I say go for it! But I would definitely look into the above listed better deals.
By the time I'm done with mine, I'll have ~$650 and that's with the stamp, engraving, AND 14" factory barrel.

I absolutely LOVE my SBRs and can't wait to add an SBS to mix.

Why don't you just try your mossy out at 18" first GED. Mine is still pretty handy at that. Heck, I bought it for my wife to use for house cleaning when I'm away

Do you have a source for this? I could see that happenning with an SBR/SBS or even a transferable MG, but I do not see it happening with a pre or post sample MG.
It probably wouldn't be prudent.
The 590's barrel mounting method isn't like an 870's. It has two areas that mount up on the magazine tube.
It would probably cost more to "customize" it than it would be worth.
I'd say gimmie the guy's name and number!

Hmmm... I'm not a fan of Wilson's version of GR sight or their big safety, so personally, no.
Are you saving weight? If you currently carry 10 rounds of ammo on your 590, and have a light system about 1.5# (IIRC) equal to the SF, you'll save a bit by losing some barrel. If not, this little bugger will probably weigh more- not necessarily "bad," since the shorter length will carry and handle much better, but if you're carrying it on search/road block/etc., it won't be light.
As far as total cost, it's how much "fancy," you want or (genuinely) need. On a SBS, I would prefer backboring & extended forcing cone, not everyone does. I much prefer the Vang dome safety. I prefer an XS banded front Dot, and have an MMC rear, thought the LPA pictured is just as user-friendly. I like stainless followers, but the Wilson green plastic thingy is fine. So, on the cheap(er) side:
870 with Dept/Officer discount around $260 (I hope its still 20% +/-!!)
Vang safety- $20
Wilson follower- $12
LPA rear- $100
XS front- $90
