Looking for a nice non-floating M4 rail. A drop-in, I would rather not pull the barrel or cut the delta ring. For the time being I am mainly wanting to mount a front vertical grip. Recommendations? Thanks!

KAC M4 RIS is the original, KAC M4 RAS is the upgraded unit. Either would serve you well. You can buy them used for under $200.

Daniel Defense makes a model that does not require the removal of the delta ring.....if you are willing to buy off-brand rails. My religion prevents it.

Serious questions. I am building a nice AR and don't want to scrimp on the handguards. What makes these things so expensive? Especially the KAC's? The above mentioned Troy's look pretty good. What's the difference? Thanks.

The question is not why the KAC is more expensive, but how can the other crap be so cheap? R&D is expensive.

Having owned and used both, I'd rather have a Troy.

They both do the job, but the Troy is more simple and more secure.

I can pretty much guarantee you that you won't be disappointed with the MRF-DI. However...if you spent $300 on an RIS, buyer's remorse seems a little inevitable.

I just bought a Daniel Defense Omega here on the board and it is rock solid, no wiggle what so ever, It is a free float but installs as simple as regular handguards. I also like the fact that it is more oval shaped, giving it a slimmer profile than some others.
BUT,
I honestly haven't shot it yet, But I don't see no obvious problems.

I'm a bit of a KAC fan-boy...I mean loyalist...but regarding the price of KAC gear; KAC engages in a colossal amount of R&D efforts and as a result has been the first to manufacture a lot of what we now see produced and 'copied' in one way or another by other companies.

Accordingly, they have also produced and delivered an astounding number of rail systems and accessories for the US Gov't. The overhead required to support such activities is certainly going to factor into pricing. It's a lot cheaper to tweak another's design and bring it to market. Keep in mind that KAC introduced the 300m BUIS in '95 and the RAS in '98. Troy, DD, and many others didn't exist at the time, and they are still not as diverse as KAC.

I'm not saying that KAC isn't taking their stuff to the bank, but there is something else involved in pricing besides their brand positioning.

It also looks waaaayyy better than the competition! :D
