Got an old J.C. Higgins Model 20 from my uncle as a house warming gift. Decided to cut the barrel down to 18", refinish the wood, and duracoat the metal. After sitting for a week, put it all back together and it looks and works great!

Total Investment - around $50 (so far) :thumbup3:

Again, this is my first hand at refinishing a gun but I think it came out pretty nice. Any suggestions for a front sight?

Well I'm pretty anal about doing projects like this so it took alot of time to prep the metal and wood. Basically, sand everything down appropriately then just put a clear varnish on the wood and ordered some duracoat and bought an air brush for the metal parts. Let it all sit for a week to cure up and reassemble.

looks pretty good. it looks like the recoil pad is dried out, if so a new one would feel pretty good.

where do you get the duracoat material?

I looked everywhere for an original recoil pad and have had no luck. The originals are shi* anyway so I'll probably just chop the old one off (screw heads are stripped) and throw on a decent slip on pad.

Got the duracoat material direct from Houts enterprises who makes duracoat

You do know that the JC Higgins is a Sears, Roebuck and Co branded High Standard 200?

Good shotgun... High Standard built a lot of police contract shotguns back in the day.

If I remember the BATFE regs correctly you need to add a front sight... just to keep things "legal"

Been working on that issue... I've considered slip on fiber optic, regular beads, magnetic ones, and even at one point considered a grease zerk... That way I could blame it on my gun not being properly greased if I take a bad shot.

I chopped a old H and R pump for a house gun... put a bead back on mine.

Simple.. works ok with shot or buck up close...(kills quail and skeet too...lol).

My shotgun lives in a spot that I fear would break a fiber sight if it got banged around enough.

Guess I ought to refinish mine... it's about white from wear.
