I reloaded some 55 gr psp's for hogs and have not been to the farm to see if they have messed up my pasture. Best one so far dressed 224#. Killed during BP last year. My next pig popper that I am fitting out is a M1A scout. I'm installing a red dot and that should work fine in the timber of SE/Okla. I am going to stoke it with some 165 gr Sierra GameKing handloads. Its a wee bit heavy handed for pigs but then again they are just pigs and they sure don't run far.

If ya hunt them long enough you find out just how tough they can be to kill at times. Them older boars and there shoulder armor can stop many bullets in there tracks.

Sounds like your set'n up a FINE piece of firepower. Love the M1's.

Not to hijack the OP's topic but this is the last hog I got out in California. He took 1 30-30 round at 15y (that penatrated 2" of the shoulder armor and didn't even touch bone) and 2 .300 Win Mag at 25&35y before he hit the ground from a broken shoulder. Still had to finish'm off with a .22 mag to the head. He had 3" of shoulder armor and mass scar tissue from fighting.

I helped skin a large boar last year and I was really surprised at the thickness of the shoulder armor, it would take a pretty good hit to get through some of that.

I've got a SoCom II 7.62 that I need to put some optics on, so far I've just shot it with open sights and it is a good shooting and fast recovery rifle, it would work good for hogs I'm sure.

Ozark tracker- I have always wanted an M1A and I knew that the .308 would body slam a pig of any size. I felt that the 165 gr Game KIng should be very accurate in the gun and I like the quick follow up shot. I have witnessed the fact that some times when the pigs cannot pinpoint the origin of the shot they will mill around allowing a second shot or sometimes 3. My 700 in .308 with 125 BT's has harvested pigs from 140+ pounds down to 15 pounds with one shot so I knew the M1A would be great. I doubt that a 350# porker is going to go far with a 165 in his shoulder or spine. I do not want to mess with a wounded pig. DRT is best in my books.

Ozark Traveler- How are you skinning the pigs out. WE have come to the conclusion to just roll them on their belly and harvest the loins and bone out the hams. Leaving the rest in the field for the song doggies. They gotta make a living too.

Outstanding shooting. You have confirmed my plan to use the AR for hogs this fall. I planned to use a 30 round mag loaded with 62 grain soft points.

I would like to see some pictures or a description of how you butcher them. One post here suggested that it works best to take the loins and leave the rest. I guess this makes good sense if you have a normal sized BBQ grill and five porkers to cut up & cook.

Russ - The reason I am suggesting to just harvest the backstraps and hams is that the front shoulder is going to be pretty well hamburgered from a .308 round. My experience with killing pigs is one shot one kill with a .308. I do not need a 30 round mag to kill a pig. I use my bolt rifle currently and have multiple kills with it. By switching to my M1A I have a quick followup shot(s) to rid the place of more hogs. I will use just a 5 or 10 round mag. My neighbor who has killed several pigs lets them run off and he confirms the kill when he sees the buzzards circling. He has had a couple of pigs estimated around 350# killed on his place.:clap3:
