I've got 2 SPS stocks myself someone can have. The Hogue stock is not bedded buy does have aluminum pillars which the SPS does not. I just personally do not like the rounded grip or the rubber feel to it. Either one is going to need replacing to get consistent results.

I have seen several 18" barrels reach 1000 yards however it was with a pretty hot load and the right powder. A 26" barrel would make it a little easier to get the needed speed if that is what the OP is planning on doing. The length of barrel should not make any difference in accuracy.

Here are a couple .308 that I have had that might give you some ideas of what your looking for. There are lots of good rifles out there and you won't go wrong with any of them.

SPS Varmint with a HS Precision stock.

700 Police (basically same gun as above but with a fluted barrel)

Factory SPS Tactical with the Hogue stock

Hot powder and a light load aren't required for consistent shots at 1000yds with an 18" barrel.

2575fps with that lot of Cor Bon 175gr, I have gotten as much as 2605fps with factory 175gr ammo. I can get more if I use 170gr HPS from Lapua, and you can get more with a 155gr load. Anyway you slice it, from 2575fps up...

Its a good theory, but its being proven wrong more and more nowadays.

Both of mine are 22" long - I've only stretched one of them before (waiting on getting my son's out when we can get access to yardage again), but it was with 168gr FGMM BTHP factory ammo and I had no issues.

Larry-
way I heard it the change was made because some snobby types didnt like the look of the old nut. FYI Sharpshooter supply sells the old style nut and the demand for the blued version is tremendous.

Second problem with every accutrigger appears to be if you trip the steel trigger without engaging the center stripe the trigger wedges.

Anyone else have that happen?

I would believe that also. There was no factual backing on what I heard, mostly hearsay.

As for the accu-trigger locking up if you don't depress the safety too, mine does this. I assumed it did this on purpose. If you look at the way it's made, I don't see how this could NOT happen.

HS used Lon Horiuchi for a spokesman their BM is not worth anywhere near 200. I'm glad you like it, they wouldn't get a dime from me.

What exactly is "plenty of use"?

HS Precision won't be getting anymore of my $$$ either.

Dustingaunder, which NF did you put on your Sako. Is that a TRG-22 or 42?
Get yourself a Near Mfg. base on that rifle. Looks like a US Optics base. I had one on my TRG-S...hated it.
Nice rifle, I'll probably be getting a TRG-42 next year. .338 Lapua version.

Sorry about that DED,

I like McM stocks. I would look into Manners also. I'd probably run a 24-26" barrel. Badger, Surgeon bottom metal. I have Seekins Bottom metal on mine. I'm not so crazy about the magazine slop. Otherwise it's ok. For rings/base I like Badger, Seekins, Near Mfg. stuff. I'm running a Hart 1-12" on my .308. I have a Broughton on my .338 and 7mm RM project. Lots of quality barrel makers out there. I think the machinist is more important nowadays. Get a quality scope. If you hand load....I would look into 7mm, 6.5 and 6mm versions of the .308 too. I have two .243's that are great shooters. I've got several 7mm rifles too. Think about what you really want the rifle for, there are better choices out there than the .308Win. It is a good all purpose round though.
Don't rush.

Get off my lawn.
It came with the 5.5-22x56 with the NP-2DD reticle, 1/4 moa clicks, and no zero stop. It is a 42 in 338lm. I ordered the Near today actually. It has the Sako Tactical Rail on it ($350 ouch) with NF high rings (1.125"). It is just too tall. The Near will be perfect. I'm selling the Sako Tac Rail on ARF and will be listing it on the Hide as soon as I get 100 posts. It is a high quality piece, but it doesn't look good and it is too long and tall.

Sorry I've been away. My phone finally died. I want to be able to kill a warming at 500-600 yards. I think I'm goin to go with a savage due to it being easier for me to mod myself. Which model should I get to start with. I want to start base model then add on everything.

Well if you are going to add everything start with a (Savage) Stevens model 200 regularly found at academy for 220-250 or try and find something used. If you are trying to take your time and build and shoot over time then a Savage with whatever features you can afford or don't want to change. I am building my 338 off of a Stevens model 200 .270 Long action, only thing left thats original is the action.
