Dead Eye-
Get a basic stevens/Savage 308. You can get the entire rifle for what a Remington 700 action costs. Replace the trigger with a Sharpshooter comp trigger for 91 bucks. Replace the stock with a good laminated microfit stock or nice synthetic for 100 and change. The barrel for just under 300.

You can pick from many models, but bottomline is cheap as you are going to replace so much. I'd avoid the accutrigger, jacks the price up and i've seen enough trigger lock-ups to not be impressed.

The savage aftermarket parts are no longer more expensive and while some companies maynot make savage parts there are plenty who do.

Many gunsmiths dont bother with all the blueprinting squaring magic on a savage because they have floating boltheads and self aligne.

Start with a 308 and learn to read wind. If in a few years you want some woo-hoo wildcat caliber you have a solid experience base to fully utilize the caliber.

Larry-
The tendency of an accu-trigger to lockup if not touched just right is bothersome in my mind. You have to recycle the bolt. My XD pistol lets you depress the regular part of the trigger without firing or locking up, You can side stroke the thin blade without jamming the trigger.

I cant say I have a warm fuzzy for the new trigger. Locking up and requiring the bolt to be recycled isnt a good thing in LE.

I really like a good, easy to adjust trigger that doesnt act the fool when I REALLY dont need the drama.

I just bought my newest .308 this weekend. Savage Model 10 PC, 20 inch bull barrel, digital camo with a Nikon Monarch BDC scope.

I can't wait to get out and shoot it. Bought it from a friend who put less than 50 bullets down the barrel.

Is there a tact stock for the savage 200?

Sure is look at midway and Sharp Shooter Supply look at their Varmint/Tactical stock or you could get a McMillan A5 if you want to spend some serious money.

If I bought a savage model 10 223, could it be barreled to shoot 308? A buddy is wanting to sell me one for 350. Is that a decent deal?

You can either get just a bolt head bout $20 and swap over the extractor and ejector or about $50 for a complete bolt head. Then you can put the new bolt head on yourself it just takes a hex bit. (This is why I like Savage no gun smith required, floating bolt head)
