Here's an update as to what I've been thinking....

I had stated several times on this forum that _I_ would not run an IDPA match. This is based on some of their outright stupid rules that I'd have to enforce if I paid to be affiliad with IDPA. As I gave the matter more thought, I determined that I could bypass most of the stupid rules by stage design. As time passed and due to the fact that the IDPA Nationals are in Tulsa (and may be held there for several more years) I decided that I would be open to running an IDPA club.

Looking at the poll, I am surprised by the number of votes IPSC/USPSA received. This is an indoor range, which is rather limiting in and of itself. This particular one, while very nice, isn't especially wide, further limiting the stage design. IPSC shooters want a high round count and honestly, I don't think I can provide that for very long without folks getting tired of 6 rds for every target.

Looking at the rest of the results, 11 votes for carry gun, 7 for IDPA and 2 for Tactical. These 3 share many similar elements between them. If we add them together, we have 20, vs. 10 for IPSC vs. 1 for Bullseye.

So I'm going to go with my original premise: Have a match where the IPSC shooter (and anyone else) can shoot their CARRY GUN in a competitive environment. I've been shooting my Kimber Compact Aluminum Stainless and having a blast :D with it. Prior to the inception of this match, it had been a very long time since I shot it at all, much less competitively using a practical, concealable holster and mag pouches. It makes sense to hone one's skills with one's actual carry gun, don't you think?

In an attempt to elicit more participation by shooters using a practical gun and holster from concealment, the first $50 Gift Certificate will go to one of those shooters! The rest of the certificates will be random draw.

I don't want to make too big a deal about the IDPA exchange, but I thought you might be interested in what I've been thinking and why.

Please take 10-15 min and look at http://tacticalshootingassociation.com/

There have been a few rule changes in the last couple of yrs to be more accomadating but it has a great target and more ah manly rules (at least the last time I looked). I used to MD off the org rules.

Might be what you are looking for.

Best,

sb

There is no doubt that IDPA has some pretty goofy rules, the one that ticks me off is the empty mag with a round in the pipe rule that you need to retain:anyone: It's empty for crying out loud!!!!!! I will still play the IDPA game at other locations and learn the game because there is some good tactical practice in it.
The existing format we have been using is fun and a great fit for our limited space not to mention that it makes me feel a little better bringing the short gun to competition. Are you suggesting that we use a cover like IDPA for concealment or a IWB holster and cover? I'm good with it if you are, have been using a short sleeve shirt for awhile now at IDPA matches.

If you mean "concealment garment," I am only looking for a garment that will conceal the chosen firearm in the chosen holster. I don't care if it's IWB or OWB, or if you pull your t-shirt over it to conceal it. (but I shouldn't be able to see a big bulge where your gun is.)

Basically, if you'd wear the combo to run to 7-11 when the cops are buying their donuts, then it would work for this.

Thanks for posting that link. I looked over their rules and I like many of them. But, honestly, I don't want to learn an entire new set of rules and penalties, etc, that would have no bearing beyond this one match. Also, I need to have other folks be able to RO and I can't expect everyone else to learn the new rules.

As it is right now, it's IDPA-like scoring with IPSC-like engagement rules. Most people already have at least a basic understanding of these rules.

(the only difference between IDPA scoring rules and this match is, the targets are NOT penetrable at this match.)

I am considering an alternative scoring method that would be easy to understand and administer with about 30 seconds of instruction. I call it "DRT" scoring, or "Dead Right There."

It consists of ONE center hit, or TWO hits anywhere. It's up to the shooter to determine which way is better. It would work very well for the Snubby division. In fact, I may try it out for that division this month.

The problem is keeping the round count up. How could I mandate 6 rds per target if you can get by with only firing one?

I think there is an application for this scoring, much like there are two basic types of scoring in IDPA and IPSC, one being a limited number of shots, the other being unlimited.

Now that I have shot something else I can make some comparisons to the Heartland match.

I like the rules the way they are and look forward to trying the shoot with an IWB holster. As for the round count, in a past match there was a stage with maybe 4 or 5 targets and we were told to shoot each 6 times. I think that was a bit much and definitely felt repetitive. Maybe we can try and keep the shots on each target to 3 or 4 at the most.

I personally don't have to shoot a certain amount of rounds to feel like I had a good time. I like the low-key environment and the fun designs. (the little trolley, anyone?!)

No, this hasn't happened. It might've been 3 targets, but not 4 or 5.

I am keeping my max round count per stage at 18, to allow "real" guns to compete.

Look for new challenges this month!
