I second the AK74. Ammo is .13 each, delivered to your door. Low, low recoil, fun to shoot, and still a man-stopper.

I've never taken much of a 2nd look at AKs cause I have been lead to believe they are not that accurate. I actually really like the appearance of them, love their report and the thought of 13 cent ammo for plinking is awesome!

If I'm wrong about the accuracy, then I guess I need to be corrected. If they aren't all that accurate are there aftermarket barrels or other items that could help an AK produce pretty tight groups?

Thanks,

Accuracy does not make a good carbine a good carbine all by itself.
Ak's do very well at the ranges they are most likely to be used.

I do know that looking cool and having a cool sound adds nothing to the worth of any practical rifle. :)

My .223 Saiga will do 2 MOA with cheap steel-cased Russian ammo.

Anyone who says that AKs are inaccurate is using a very strict version of "accurate". If I aim at your head from 200 yards away, I'm going to hit your head. That's accurate enough for what I need. I'm not hunting with it, not taking any long shots, and have no need to thread any needles with my rifle.

If it makes you feel any better, I can easily pick up my AK (and any well built AK) and qualify "expert" on any military range. That's all I ask of it.

Now, it won't shoot same-hole groups at anything over 30 yards, but that's not what I need, nor what I define as "accurate".

My AK74, 3 shot group, 100 yds, milsurp ammo, almost 1/3 inch center-to-center!

Shooting US-made ammo can go a long way in pulling things in. Get rid of the cleaning rod, and crown the barrel, get some decent sights, and you can do 1-1.5 MOA with concentration, on a good day.

2 MOA is mil-standard for both the AK and the M-16.

My cheap WASR was much more accurate than I was lead to believe. I did sell it however just because the platform to me isn't as quick as an AR (mag drops and reloading) and because it's easier to get ambidexterous parts for an AR. With that said, my WASR ate everything I fed it and was a very easy shooter.

I don't know, do you need to be able to kill a man at any more than 400 yards? My cheap WASR will print less than man-sized groups at that distance. Right around 3 MOA. That's from unsupported field positions, too, so it might be capable of a little bit better if you put it in a vise or on sandbags or whatever the hell.

With cheap russian steel cased ammo (7.62), on a good day, mine will do 5-6 MOA.

With good ammo, it will go down to 4.

Mine is a vector arms.

most on average do about 2-3 MOA

This has not been my experience with AK's. I believe SOME do 2-3 MOA, a few do less, and a large number are 4-5 MOA.

I think the issue with AK's, mechanically speaking, is that there is such a variance in manufacturers/builders that getting a quality AK can be a bit of a crap-shoot unless you get one from a known quantity like Krebs Custom or Jim Fuller.

I think the odds of getting a 4-5 MOA AK are much greater than for most other carbines available today, primarily because there is no standard in this country like there is for the AR15/M16/M4 family of carbines (which can also be atrocious if the manufacturer does not hold their product to appropriate standards).

I've owned a dozen AK variants over the years and only had one that I was satisfied with (a Maadi) in terms of accuracy i.e. 2-3 MOA.

If I got an AR15 that would not hold 2 MOA out of the box, I would be shocked. I've only owned one AR that would not hold that standard and that was an acknowledged manufacturer error that was fixed right away.

AK's on the other hand rarely come from builders who guarantee their work, shops like Krebs or Fuller excepted. I had an AK that came from Armory USA (one of the supposedly higher end AK's) that came out of the box with a canted sight tower. This is totally unacceptable quality control IMO.

All that said, every one of the AK's I've owned has gone bang every time I pulled the trigger except when the ammo was at fault.

My take............
