So I've been looking into basic survival more and more and it has me looking into the minimalist thing pretty heavily and with the good backpacking weather coming up, I'm thinking of taking a different approach to backpacking this next time and going as full minimalist as I feel safe doing (mind you, I'm not going to Les Stroud it with a knife and a multi-tool, but I'm looking to head out for a few days in Oklahoma's Colder Fall weather with less than 30Lbs of extra stuff on me). I'd like to even do some living off of the land food-wise, but I'm not completely sure of my fishing/hunting skills with improvised hunting/fishing tools (bringing arrow-heads/fishing hooks/line and having to build a bow or fishing-rod, etc...).

In looking at the various survival and minimalist sights, one thing has started to Intrigue me - Personal Survival Kits (specifically, minimalist PSKs). I've started putting one together, but as a pack-rat, mine has ended up being pretty large and I'm having trouble letting go of certain things.

Here's ESEE's Bladeforums contest (and some good ideas):

Here's some basics from a couple of other sites:

Just playing with it for now, but I plan on building one from my left-over backpacking stuff and building the Super Cat stove from here:

And taking out a limited-budget PSK and really testing it out for a few days of minimalist hiking.

Would this be a urban, country or for everything?

That's a good point. For me I always refer to my hiking / backpacking experience (and a little bit of long-hike hunting). Mostly for "Oklahoma Mountains", Swampy areas around lakes, creeks, woods, Fall/Spring-time stuff.

I guess you could build one for several different situations even in OK (obviously we don't have a tropical or Mountain need here, but we've got darn near everything else) if you got into urban, etc...

I'm not really including EDC stuff or Urban in mine, but this thread could probably benefit from any info you have about whatever situation you've ever thought about.

Man I think it's really interesting that most people don't keep a sharpie or permanent marker in any of their kits. I have a black sharpie or two (often a red one also) in every single one of my emergency/BUG/medical bags. You never know what you might need to write down or on, in an emergency.

Mine has a pen/pencil in it - I have a "write-in-rain" pen/pad that I use in my backpacking stuff.
