For that price it'd be hard to go wrong I would think. I have one of the old Professional Ordinance Carbon 15 uppers on a DPMS lower and it works extremely well. All I did was upgrade the bolt and drop a match trigger in the lower. It's been very effective at the practical rifle matches I use it in.

Have you ever gotten it hot enough that you worry about the upper, particularly the receiver threads? I have been thinking about making a really light weight gun but I make my AR glow as a matter of routine.

No, this is just a game gun for me and I never run off more than about 40 rounds per course of fire. I would have the same concerns you have if it was a hard use gun, but that's what my Colt and Noveske are for. :)

IIRC, Rob S. over on M4Carbine.net built a super lightweight fighting carbine. I know there are threads over there that give the actual weights of most popular "tactical" parts and accessories for your lightweight builds.

My AR weighs less than 6 pounds including a Surefire Scout Light and Aimpoint T1. I'm sure that I could shave another pound if I went really tried, but it would simply be, to quote George Mallory 'because it's there.'
