Hopefully you will live long enough to wear out the spring, either firing or leaving it cocked. Every time you do take it to the range and it works well you know it is good to go.

If its the gun you are going to use to defend your life and the life of your family I would suggest you shoot that gun every chance you get. I would carry it also. Just my opinion but any weapon I choose to defend myself with I make sure im a nightmare with that weapon. I would hate to be woke up in the middle of the night and pick up something I havent fired in 6 months and trust it would work. Just a thought sir and only my opinion.

you're going to be fine. I don't think you can have one in the chamber uncocked with an XD because it's striker fired...

anyway, i'm sure someone will correct me, but keeping the spring compressed shouldn't affect the spring life. It's only the compression and release thousands upon thousands of times that wears out the spring. Again, this could be wrong, but i know keeping one in the chamber won't hurt your gun

I know many think that is true. But it has been proven that compression & relief of springs wears them equally, sometimes more than just compression. I will find the video and article on this experiment when I get a to PC. (I'm on cell)

As for leaving it cocked or not... I would leave it cocked or leave it at the store. (If we are talking CCW).
