You should really check out a M&P 9c. It's a really good mid-size gun. It can be concealed and carried, or it's a good size for range practice. It's a little smaller than a glock 19 and, in my opinion has better ergonomics and a better feel. They come from the factory with 3 dot sights that are non-snag and easy to see. They are very reliable and easy to take down to maintain and to clean. There are also a lot of holster selections to be had for the M&P. The best part is the S&W customer service and warranty.

My advice on a first hangun is to:

1) Buy a cheaper, no frills, medium sized gun, from a good manufacturer (S&W, Taurus, Ruger). I would also stay with 9mm since they are the cheaper to shoot. (or buy a used handgun).

2) Shoot it alot over a few weeks/months, until you become more proficient, and can figure out what you like and don't like about it, maybe rent some others too.

3) Read about Actions: Single Action, Single Action/Double Action, Double Action Only. Youtube has some good videos.

4) Try lightweight Poly guns and also heavier traditional metal guns.

5) Remember most CCW handguns are for emergencies. They are not fun to shoot.

Basically I disagree with many of the earlier posts telling you to just go rent a buncha guns. If you don't have alot of trigger time on any handgun, I don't think you'll be able to distinguish which one you like best.

If it turns out you don't like the gun you bought in step 1, you can sell it later and probably get most of your money back.

my wifes mom picked up a kel-tec p32.
we shot it today, and that thing is tiny.
my wife likes it more than the taurus.
so we're probably going to look at getting at one of those, or that ruger since it's a little stronger.
she says we only need one pistol, since were not apart much.
but i feel we'll be safer or at least feel safer knowing we're both prepared.

Until you guys do more research you don't need any guns. You need to research brands and calibers, you need to research what it takes to concealed carry, and you need to research gun safety. I see you are 21 years old but what about your wife? She can't get a CCW unless she is 21.

At what point do they need any guns? How long has he and his wife been shooting? What level of skill-set do they have? If you don't know the answer to this, then you don't need to be giving "until you guys do more research you don't need any guns" as advice.

Way to make some assumptions based solely on his age. He's doing research by asking questions on an internet forum - this is exactly what OKshooters.com is for - not for buying/selling stuff in the classifieds or asking where the best deals are with every post and not contributing anything of value like most of our new members are doing lately

I'm going to throw in with the XD crowd.
Reliable, simple to dis-and-re-assemble, and has a basic (grip) safety.

Like others have said, try out a few, take a class, etc etc.
