No one has thrown a nod to a .243 yet. It can be loaded down to shoot squirrel without having to use a strainer bag to cook the resulting mush or loaded up to take serious game or with the right bullet really tear into that guy coming through the door.

I am torn between the HK91, AR-10 and the M14 in the scout or SOCOM length. All are in the 308 NATO round which is easily obtainable. The caliber is capable of taking smaller game as well as very large game and or killing people. All can be used for CQB with a folding stock. All can be used for longer range shots with the right optics or without, if you have good enough eyesight. All provide a frame for full auto capability if needed. All are very reliable.

The FAL is the best quality battle rifle design as yet, provided FNs newest offerings don't overshadow it. The AR is pretty great, but an AK74 with a NON DUST COVER rail-mounted optic is superior. The shooting through barriers argument is true, it is a fine way to stop a fight, and the .30 caliber rounds are devastating. I'd pick a FAL.

For an all around rifle, I think that, given you know how to service the system and have it in fine order to start, any of the popular choices would be great. But this is a poll, and I voted for the right arm of the free world.

Good ol' 10/22 or a Remington 700 in .308.

IMO the bolt .308 or even .223 would be best. Something with a lighter barrel (either shorter or lightweight). Ammo is everywhere, etc.

I love my ar's, but when it comes down to one rifle do you really want something that could potentially have more problems, IE broken bolt, etc? The bolt has less moving parts and would fire time after time. I'm not dissing the AR and I have never had a problem with mine, but...

AK47 is best all purpose rifle. The most important thing is that it goes bang every time. If SHTF then you want something that does not need CLP to keep running. Ammo is cheap and plentiful and can hit a Pig/Deer/Badguy at 300 yards easy.
