If they are coming in head on, shoot them in the chest, about 2 inches above their stomach line. This will anchor them well. If they are broadside, shoot them right behind the front shoulder. If they are running away from you, aim for the back of the neck, where the skull and the spine meet.

Keep in mind, coyotes are usually fast coming in and have the afterburners on going out. They often zig and zag too. Good Luck and keep asking your questions.

One time in Osage county I was on my 3rd yote of the day and I didn't lead enough. The resulting hip shot left the dog laying legless. (.308). I walked up and allowed it to bite the end of the barrel as I simultaneously squeezed a compassionate second round off. Cranial vaporization was the most humane method of the moment. ;)

at this point i'm rootin for the coyote

Don't worry too much about it Crag, just go out and have some fun. I'll go so far as to say, if you can hit it in the front 1/2 with your .270 you'll probably kill it real quick like.

Try to sneak in the woods when you go.

Pay attention to the wind.

Don't be silhouetted, sit against a cedar tree or brush.

Don't make any sudden movements.

Take good shots, if it's moving or won't stop, pass it up if you don't feel comfortable.

Keep it simple and you'll be eatin pulled coyote tacos in no time....

And keep an eye out for that 1 in 100 rabid coyote that likes to sneak up behind you while you're calling and pounce on your head, they can be mean.....

Speakin of rabid, I've got one runnin round the pasture across the river and I don't think he has a hair one. He looks like one of those chupacabra pictures you see down in Mexico. Both times I have seen him cows were in the way and I couldn't get a comfortable shot. Mangey bastard.

I think you ought to trap him and take him to the vet :)

Been seeing some yote pictures from around McAlester, and a bunch of those look REAL bad with the mange; guess I need to actually call one in and kill it more often out here to keep track of these.
