It's whatever the history books say. Why? Because the winner decides what is written. If Germany and Japan won WWII, I'm sure they would've been hero's for some just cause. Right and wrong just depends on what side of the fence your standing on. Not many people go out to die for causes they don't believe in.

The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, passed by the Senate on April 8, 1864, by the House on January 31, 1865, and ratified on December 6, 1865, abolished slavery as a legal institution.

Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865.

He wasn't too long dead.

Lawl, is the real debate here which geographical section of 1860's America was less racist? That's priceless.

I'll agree with the stars and bars guys on this one, at the risk of you lumping me in with them. Slavery played a huge part in it, defending the civil/human rights of black people did not. My unsupported guess is that the vast majority of Northern citizens and politicians didn't see them as human beings in the 1860's.

So what is the real question here? I know it didn't come up because we want to discuss American History. Nobody really believes that all those 1860's white folk went to war on behalf of the rights of black people, do you? Seriously?

Oh hell no! Even Lincoln didn't view slaves as equals, he just wanted to afford them to opportunity to pursue life, liberty, & happiness.

I think the point is that some people are of the opinion that every reason the war was fought can be traced back to slavery and others feel that slavery played absolutely no role in the war.

Because the Founders did it, it must be right!

there are a few reason's why America has lasted as long as it has. our vast resources and the Constitution. i believe the constitution was written to be taken literally. if we start eroding away at one of the most important messages of it, we set a dangerous precedent.

i also see that in some ways it has become archaic. but, we must keep it intact as long as possible.

I would also agree that we need to keep the Constitution intact as long as possible. And part of that requires that we recognize that there are those in our society who do not respect/obey it and are apparently against it. Of course they will not say this openly but their actions and beliefs seem to indicate such.

Questions to consider;

What about those who take the oath to the Constitution and then violate that oath or allow/condone it's violation by others around them?

Can a person who violates an oath they've freely taken ever be trusted?

P.S. Thank you sir for the positive feedback on our meeting/transaction.

Everyone know it was a war for oil. BUSH LIED, THOUSANDS DIED!

The South didn't even have any WMDs. Lincoln had to make that part up, because George Bush doesn't care about black people.

It was politics, man. I bet Lincoln wasn't losing any sleep worrying about their life, liberty and happiness. He was playing a game.

Didn't Mr. Slave Liberty himself state on more than one occasion that everything he stood by he did so because he thought it would help preserve the Union, and an acceptable alternative for him would be to preserve the Union and NOT end slavery?

Slavery was point of debate, an excuse, something tangible to grab on to. In that regard, it was a major factor in "why" the civil war was fought. But to think that huge war was fought because Lincoln, or or the majority of Northerners, were upset at inherent wrongness of black people being treated as property...is a joke. They didn't give a damn. The logistical reasons? Yes. The human rights reasons? Nobody cared, save for a small minority.
