This may be one of those here's your sign kind of questions but here it is.I have some loose ammo that has been laying around for awhile and looks like crap.Would it be safe to use my brass cleaning tumbler the clean it up.Sounds like a good idea to me but I don't want live rounds going off in various directions.

I've heard of tumbling loaded Lead ammo to remove excess lube, but unless it has a crust or anything that might affet function, I'd suggest that you just shoot it and tumble the brass.

Visited a high volume commerical remanafacturer and they used tumblers to do the final finish to clean the ammo up before shipping. That said, it would depend on how full is the case when finished. Just would not excessively tumble it.

I wouldn't do it. If it's a matter of appearance, try a light application of nail polish remover (acetone) with a cotton ball and/or polishing with 0000 steel wool. Then again, like somebody else said, if it's nothing but appearance just shoot it up and clean the cases aftewards!

Just tumble the ammo for a while and see what it does. Don't hold the tumbler in your lap put it out on the back porch. It won't affect the ballistics of the cartridge either.
