I was listening to the BBC last night when they were doing an interview with one of the Japanese people that's an official spokeperson and one of the questions was "Why ask the US for assistance" and the answer was specifically that 3 mile island had many similarities to the Fukushima reactor.

Makes sense, since supposedly the reactors are actually some of the first generation of reactors built by GE. The Fukushima plant is quite old if I'm not mistaken.
Unfortunately, as they were just talking about on the news, the "XX" amount of tons of spent fuel rods don't either. They're just housed in a building. They were saying that if the water recedes from the spent fuel rods, they can catch fire and any ash and smoke would spread cesium.
All I know about all this is that it has the potential to be a dump truck full of suck for a lot of people.
It is clearly already a wheelbarrow full of suck for some.
