I started out this morning hoping to sit back and relax and get a nice tom to come in. Well they were all gobbling but didn't seem to wanna leave the hens they were with...so after hearing some others gobbling in the distance I decided to take off after em.
After about 600 yards of walking, I could hear em pretty good but had to back track to get across this deep creek to where they were. I walked nearly a mile into my spot and they were congregated up within 500 yards from my truck! Once I started getting close, I could see a tom harassing two hens out in a field on other property. Well the tom ended up chasing the hens back over close to where I was at.
I start slow walking towards their direction and let out a few yelps and thunder chickens sound off everywhere! So I back into a cedar tree and sit down. About 30 seconds later, this nice tom walks out strutting his stuff. I let him get to about 35 yards then took the shot. He was DRT!
He has a 9" beard and 1" spurs. I am proud of it for my first turkey!
