But seriously. Riding bikes has gotten me in the best shape of my life.

Highly recommend!!! :thumb:

Last year, when I got down to 173, I was riding my bike daily (between 5-10 miles). It was extremely fun, however, I was away from my family for 3 months and had all the time in the world..... Now, I barely have enough time to go to the gym (without being harassed by my better half).

Understand that. Maybe do stuff at home? Something like power yoga? I do and love it. It's fun for the whole family!

Look for Bryan Kest's DVD's on Amazon.

Ok, I'm a little lost. I've been messing with the calorie counter, and they recommended a 2000cal/day for me to reach my goal.. They've got it broken down into categories and how much of each you can have.

Today, I've only eaten 2 small apples, and 1 banana and I'm already freaking over the amount of sugar they recommend. How in the HELL is it possible to stay under if a few pieces of fruit kill me already??

I don't even worry about sugars in fruit. The way I see it, fresh, whole fruits and veggies are some of the best things you can put in your body.

Fruit is actually pretty high in sugar so its not that surprising. Why do you think dieticians tell you to avoid fruit juices even when they aren't enriched?

From what I recall of my nutrition course last semester, apples are probably one of the best fruits you can eat. Even though they are high in sugar, its in a low glycemic index form which means it is converted from its complex carbohydrate form to glucose slowly and therefore doesn't cause a blood sugar spike and helps make you feel fuller longer.

In order to keep you from feeling carb starved, pick up a basic dietician Glycemic Index book and refer to that. The lower the GI the better for you as it keeps you from spiking and all.

My goal is to keep my net carbs under ~60 grams/day. This follows the atkins method of subtracting fiber amount from carbs.

I hate going to bed hungry....

I can write a book on advice in this thread, but I won't bother. All I can tell you is that this is a bad mistake. Going to bed hungry means there is nothing in your body to keep your metabolism running. So, it will basically go into a hibernating state because it doesn't know when it will get its next batch of food (energy). Before you go to bed, drink some Casein Protein with Fat free milk. Casein is considered to be a time-released protein so it will help keep your metabolism running throughout the night. Metabolism running = calories burned.

Good luck with your quest, and don't quit.

So... you got a *cheap* bike you could recommend for my 7 mile commute each way to the gym?

You could get a nice ride for $510 (should be less at a bike shop) in the Specialized Crosstrail.

Some people ride bikes, I hit the skatepark with my roller blades. I try to go daily, but work and life intereferes. Today RAIN is interfering. But between the RIGOROUS bowl carving I do, and the hour of GYM work I do daily, I've lost 72lbs in the past 12 months. I went from 287 down to 215lbs. I've always been 6 feet and 3/4 of an inch, but for some reason I grew almost an inch. I'm now at 6'1.5" posture!

I take in 2000 calories, on a 2075bmr daily, deriving 200grams of protein on that budget. I'll echo what dx3 said, get a 30-40gram protein shake (I use monster milk which is loaded in the casein fats - and PreAlk creatine). Eat your damn veggies, and when you eat fruits, do so on an empty stomach, and let the fruits pass thru your stomach before eating or drinking anything else. Drink a gallon of water every day, and don't have more than one beer at night (prefereably right before dinner - helps the curb the after dinner blood sugar spike). Also get the book EAT THIS NOT THAT 2011. Follow it. Quit eating the crap that the American Food Machine is serving. Eat whole foods and only stuff you can pronounce. LOL

Finally, have your doctor perform a test for your testosterone levels. At 45 they drop off drastically and make you FAT and SLOW and no amount of exercise is gonna make you skinny. At 46 I look better and am stronger than ever. I'm at 12% body fat, according to the 7 caliper pinch method performed by the head trainer at the YMCA.

BUT YOU HAVE TO WANT IT, AND YOU HAVE TO LIVE IT!

There is no quick fix.
