I have dumbbells and an olympic weight set that I don't use much but this seemed pretty interesting and I've heard a lot of folks talk about it. Thanks for the info.

HiImSeth,

As an example, check the "Kettlebell Swing" movement. This movement can be done with one of your barbell plates, say a 25 lb. to start. Actually, swinging two dumbells held together is better than a single kettlebell or a plate....

IMO, it's not so much the kettlebells themselves but the kettlebell system that's so effective. Infact, switching back and forth between the k-bells and d-bells will require subtle changes/adaptations in balance and movement , good things in a functional exercise program.

MS, do you do this at your house with your own kettleball equipment or at a gym? How much does that stuff usually run to get what you'd need to get started? Can you buy it locally or do you have to order it?

Thanks.

I got some really nice ones made right here in Oklahoma. The guy's name is Wes Wright. He's been doing this stuff for ions it appears. Trains lot of folks (trained Allen Green before this fight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-K6dvTmqZs ). Anyway, I just got two 26lb which he said would last me forever. I'll probably get bigger ones once my body adjusts to this. They were $70 a piece. Right now, I'm doing it in my house but will most likely move to the garage once I figure out how to do the exercises correctly. Because right now, I'm still learning the techniques and trying to get a routine together, so I'm referencing the manual a lot.

Maddskillz,

There is a place in Dallas that sells them for the best price I've found every time I look. For example, 26lb KB is $55. Of course shipping is usually what kills it, but I typically travel through D/FW monthly and usually stop and pick some up for myself, and the guys in our training group as needed. I'd be happy to pick some up for you next time I go down if you end up wanting some heavier ones. As I remember you from the one time we met, it will be highly likely that you will want bigger ones very soon. I think once you get used to the proper technique of lifting them you will find that a 26lb KB is too light. The difficulty of lifting them is HIGHLY technique dependant.

For example, there is a firefighter who trains with us and he is in a lot better shape than me, and strong... but we did a workout with the KB on Tuesday where you take a 70lb KB in each hand and clean and push press them 30 times for your best time. I beat him by ~1.5 minutes. Not because I'm that much stronger... just because he doesn't do KB 3-4 times per week like us, so his technique isn't as good and it was harder on him.

You can check prices of these KB on ebay by typing in "kettlebell" in the search bar. Then look for listings from "Master Fitness". The pictures are always of the kettlebell (which is more silver colored compared to the dragon door KB) on a blue background. Once you click on an auction you can click on a link to look through his ebay store.

Sweet! I've noticed that these are too light for doing chest stuff. But they still give me a good pump?! Which I think is weird. The weight of these things is so awkward you use so many more muscle groups to stabilize and I guess my chest is working more than I thought. I do feel it in my chest the next day, so they are doing something there, even for their weight. My forearms are screaming the entire time though and being as that I'm primarily a grappler, I think I'm really going to benefit in that area a ton!

I'll keep your offer in mind. There's still so many exercises that are a strain for me though after just a few reps, I do think these will suffice for a month or so. After that, I do think my body will get stronger in it's weaker areas and I will probably need to move up.

On another note... I love the entire cardio blast these things give me. Each exercise incorporates the entire body and afterwords I feel like I've been hit by a truck. Which is great, because I like the idea of working the body as one unit instead of sitting down and doing a military press or laying on my back and doing a bench press for example. These really work the core at the same time. With grappling, when you can make the body function as one strong unit it improves your technique by leaps and bounds.

Also, to any of you guys that train MMA/Grappling, I'd love to attend if you all have open invitations. And you all are very much welcome at my gym anytime as well.

Cool. I probably won't be going until September anyway... after that I usually go at least once a month.... so whenever you're ready, just give me a hollar.

Couldn't agree with you more on this. You'll be amazed at the explosiveness you gain after using them for awhile. I haven't done any traditional lifting since I started using KB back in Nov. and my whole shoulder/trap/chest/tri area is larger than it's ever been. In all reality, pretty much everywhere is. My legs and calves, biceps as well.

I've been wanting to come over and try out some classes over there... just haven't had the time lately. Send me a PM (or post here) what days/times you attend. If I'm going to go check it out, it might as well be a day you are going to be there.

Right now, I'm averaging 3 days a week (cycling with my wife and doing KB's on other days). The days I attend are typically up in the air during the week, but I'm always there on Saturdays at 1:00 until whenever.

I'll PM you my cell number so you can call when you think you may be able to make it some evening or on a Saturday.
