This shows that criminals will use aks and other rifles. So should the solution be to deprive law abiding citizens from these, and leave them to face these criminals only with pistols and bolt action rifles?

Was it a Class three full auto? If not, its just a modern sporting firearm, not an assault weapon. Same action as your grandfather used to kill deer.

It would be surprising if criminals chose uncommon firearms - then you might build a case that those firearms are somehow facilitating criminal acts.

Read that story a few minutes ago along with another one from a Queens news source that added that the Ak47 can fire 600 rounds per minute and was on the street because the assault weapons ban had been allowed to expire.
Bingo. If it's not FA then it's not an Avtomat Kalashnikova .
