I'm with Honeybee in the sense of building one. You may save some money on the whole of a gun by buying a complete gun, but that good value goes out the window when you start upgrading the drawback parts that gave you the savings. Billet is nice, but there's nothing wrong with cast. It's 60+ years of proof. Build one ground up, it'll not only be "yours", but it'll be exactly what you want. If you can find parts these days

Lol the chart resurfaces!

Now that the obligatory chart hate is posted... :)

Neither Bushmaster or Oly would be choices I'd make. In the mid-tier, I'd pick a S&W or Stag 1st, followed by DPMS, Rock RIver, etc.. Palmetto State Armory has been turning out good stuff for the money, but their QC and service have slipped a bit in the ban craze. If you have just a little extra coin, Colt, Daniel Defense or BCM are well worth the extra money IMO.

It's been difficult for me as I've been wanting to buy so many other accessories for guns I already own, but I've managed to control myself and start buying my AR piece by piece. Once I get all the parts, I'll look at putting it together. I'm not in a rush, so I've put things on back order and they eventually ship. Helps stretch out the cost. :thumb:

I have been overwhelmed with the great response to my lack of knowledge of AR brands and components.
I very grateful for all the input and counsel.
I have received much encouragement and edification by you guys, I will try to take this and proceed with the project.
Thanks so very much

Colt 6920. Its the standard. I would wait for prices to come down. DPMS and Bushmaster are night and day compared to Colt out of the box. They all have their good points (mostly price) but you're going to want to start with a 6920. I'm talking out of the box.

Barney,
If you're interested, we can meet up and you can look at and handle and even shoot all my AR's and decide what you want before you start dropping coin on parts you may not want.
