Anyone experimented with the Fresnel type lenses to concentrate solar energy? I have ordered a set of lenses off of Ebay to play with. I can see an immediate use as a fire starter, and can also see using the concentrated power to cook with with proper setup (dutch oven). I worked with Lasers in my previious life and am concerned about eye damage with concentrated solar energy. inadvertent reflection of a concentrated beam could do some serious eye damage so safety has to play a big part in what I do. I've watched a few videos on U-tube where the presenter did some careless things. One was reaching into the edge of the beam to take off a pan lid. I kept expecting to see smoking fingers.. another was the use of a stainless steel mirror to redirect the energy without safegards to protect others from reflections. If you can concentrate the energy enough to cook with, it has the potential to do damage..
One advantage of the solar heat cooking method in SHTF situations would be the lack of a smoke column to betray your location. If they are close enough to smell the cooking, invite em in...

Nope. Closest thing would be that we used to use the little magnifying glasses that came in cracker jacks to melt the tar that they sealed cracks in the street, burn holes in paper, etc. when we were kids. I'm dating myself, I know...

:lookaroun I tried to set some dried leaves on fire. No more cracker jacks for me after that ...

Blitzfike, I've seen those but not experimented with them. GC would tell you I have too many things going on right now anyway. However, I do find this kind of stuff really, really interesting. I've done the solar oven thing with a pizza box and some tin foil. Although my potatos au gratin was more like potato soup it was edible and tasted pretty good. The most surprising thing was how hot the danged thing got! You gotta be careful with that stuff! LOL

I'll keep y'all posted on my experimental results when i get the material. I am also looking for a source of stainless steel mirrors to work some additional heat into the mix from other lenses. I may end up polishing my own sheet stainless as what I've found has been pretty pricy.

A friend had one of those placed outside their church waiting for someone to take it away and the sun hitting it set the internals on fire and the Choctaw FD had to come extinquish it..

I've been playing with the Fresnel lenses and if I was going to be stationary, I could, with some stainless steel mirrors get enough heat from about 5 or 6 lenses to cook with. One lens just concentrates the heat in a single spot and will burn the food at that point. A windup turntable would maybe make it work, but I'm thinking the proper use for the fresnel lens is to start the cook fire. I took some bark from a lace bark elm in between some of the recent rain storms, and with the sun at the 1:00 position, I was able to get a flame from the bark in just over 3 seconds. Paper took quite a bit longer, and cotton balls with vasoline ignited in about 3 seconds also. The brick rocket stove shows more promise for outdoor cooking than anything else I've seen lately. Not something you want to pack out though. The good old dutch oven is still the go to item of cookware for primitive cooking for me. As long as I have propane and a truck to transport all the camp junk, I rough it with a camp king oven and a giant coleman propane camp stove. It is the one with the extremely high output burners. Between those appliances, I can cook like at home except for the microwave.

I have a fairly big one that I made a stand for. It is a spot focus lense, mine will make about a 5/8 inch spot. This is better for firestarting or getting maximum heat in one spot. You could just the same place the target slighty closer and spread the heat out for cooking and the like. Its focal point is about 43 inches away. Use eye protection, the brightness and UV levels are blinding. Same for anyone watching. I havent got mine out since the middle of winter so Im looking foward to summer to really see what itll do.

It would be nice to know where we can get large fresnel lenses other than older projector big screen TVs. The biggest ones I've been able to find wouldn't really do the job for cooking.
