I am needing a new shotgun and was wanting an autoloader. Have been debating between the 22" FN SLP MKI and the Mossberg 930 SPX.
I like the idea of the FN as I have some of their stuff and it is rock solid plus it has the chrome lined barrel and threaded for chokes.
The SPX has had mixed reliability and no threaded chokes.

I'd appreciate anybody with experience to give me some insight.
Haven't been able to handle the FN but held the SPX today.

thanks

I'd go with the SLP all day long of the two you mention. I like mine and it's the softest shooting 12ga I've ever shot. Another option you might look at is the Winchester SX2 or SX3. I think they are basically the same gun only a bit lighter weight. The 3.5" chambered guns are a bit easier to reload. If you want the energizer bunny of shotguns get a Benelli M1 or M2.

Thanks Shadowrider!
I see you have the standard stock, did you look at the pistol grip? I have heard it makes reloading more complicated.
Also, why did you go with the FN instead of the Benelli?

It's hard beat... I got mine back when most were shooting Benelli's in 3 gun... very reliable and definately fast... The only downside to me anyway - as with most semi auto's it's nose heavy and shots flat... not the guns fault, I just cut my teeth on balanced o/u's and 60/40 POI from skeet and sporting clays... was lookin at the sexy blue one FN now offers - lol... wow... the price has climbed - you gotta love supply and demand...

No I didn't look at the pistol grip stocks. I'm just not a fan of them.

I went with the SLP mostly because they were and kind of still are the only option out there that will take the abuse of 3gun except for the Benelli. Remington's VersaMax is getting some good reviews nowadays but I bought this before it was available. When I bought it there was really only these and the Benelli to consider and at the time a Benelli was just unobtainium. I do like the way the Benelli handles and points better than the SLP, quite a bit actually, but there are a lot of other little things about the SLP I like better, the SLP doesn't have that goofy cartridge drop lever, it seems to run cheap WalMart bulk when some Benellis don't and it's definitely easier on the shoulder. I did acquire a M2 tactical with comfortech stock in a trade and thought about keeping it and selling my SLP. Had the M2 had a vent rib barrel I probably would have. For the record I don't think there's a finer SG on the market today than Benelli but the SLP/Win SXx series are a close second. I'm just biding my time and watching to see if the Benelli Vinci hangs as good as the M1/M2s. If I replace the SLP it will likely be a Vinci.

Edit: Don't get the competition model SLP unless you just like to waste money. The extra goodies you get are not worth the extra cash, they are basically just a blue anodized version of this one. Put a Nordic +1 extension on it, trim the forearm for easier loading, bevel the loading port and get CRums to weld your lifter. Done...

Thanks for the input guys. I really appreciate it.
I've never looked at the Benelli's for some reason but have always been happy with my FN products.
I'll post when I get one tracked down.

Got the gun this week and have had a chance to put a few through it.
Ran 200 of the walmart bulk pack federal 7 1/2 and the gun doesn't like to eject them reliably.
Also put 35 high brass buck and slug at varying intervals with the federal and they all ran fine.
I picked up a few cases of Winchester super handicap heavy target today and will put at least a hundred through it tomorrow.

On a side note, the pistol grip feels great until about 100 rounds and then it starts to bruise the first "knuckle" of my thumb. This is due to the long distance to the trigger that makes me rotate my hand forward.(I don't have small hands) Will go on the hunt for a straight stock I guess. I will try a modified grip tomorrow with the thumb on top and fingers on the pistol grip.
It feels comfortable but we'll see.
