Yeah I'm just looking to build a good carbine that's reliable. It's not going to be for long distance. I know there is a lot of sales men and internet warriors out there and appreciate the heads up I will be sure to do the research before buying. I really just wanted to see if people were buying from other places other than midway usa and brownells or if they were buying directly from the companies. I appreciate everyone's input it all helps out.

Palmetto State Armory is a good place to start. They sell everything you need to build an AR and they have great quality with reasonable prices. I've built 2 ARs using their uppers and various ore components and they run flawlessly for ~$800 guns.

Just keep in mind, no matter what you do, don't even consider checking the headspace!

IF you choose to go away from local sources.....

IMO - the only group you need : Rainier Arms, Primary Arms, Bravo Company, Wilson Combat, from there specific top quality items can be had for good prices at DSG Arms, Palmetto State, ADCO,

After that - go to Midway or Brownells/Sinclair etc and watch for pricing breaks.

Overall - excellent products and CS can be had at the first 3.

Just My Opinion - you can search this forum for "new AR builds" etc......and find plenty of Recs for products from my self and numerous others, just weed out what your common sense/experience/research is on the Rec'd components

Are there specific parts that benefit from buying higher quality and others that you could basically 'plug and play' with no difference?

The most important parts for performance are the barrel, trigger, bolt carrier group and in some cases a decent muzzle brake or comp. Although other parts can improve the feel and appearance of the rifle, in most cases they will not effect reliability.

I went with palmetto for my last build and it ran just under $900 but then changed out the trigger springs and it made a huge difference.
After that I changed out the barrel and turned it into a 300 blackout, the match grade barrel was an additional $360 at the time and I put a $100 AAC silencer adaptor/comp/flash hider.
Finally I put a $300 hunting scope on it instead of an aimpoint simply because I like it better for hunting.
Not the cheapest way to go but I ended up with a great hunting gun that I built myself.

Nice. That's what my friend is wanting to do is build one with good bolt carrier and trigger and the rest kind of middle of the road and then later come back and upgrade it. I already have one so I think I'm just going to buy parts as I come across them and build one the way I want it set up
