Comfortable shoe. I found the support offered by the Johnston and Murphy shoe to last longer than Ecco. When a shoe starts breaking down, my knees feel it first. In my opinion, they are both a quality shoe. But, I get more mileage out of the Johnstons.

I'm a teacher, on my feet all day during the school year. I'm in decent shape. 5'10" 170 lbs. Knees and back aren't perfect anymore. Wearing Ecccos, my knees will alert me around Christmas time that it's time to think about a new pair. Johnston & Murphy's delay that alarm until Spring Break.

I've heard plenty of people tell me Ecco is better, and maybe that is their experience. My experience, Johnston & Murphy for the win!

Here, but occasionally There.
Well, to disagree with one commenter, boots are NOT only for riding. If one were interested in western boots, be sure and get a walking heel. I used to work on the farm/ranch and always wore western boots, and I put in long hours doing that. Never had an issue and they actually help support one's ankles.

However, because of eczema, I had to give up western boots because the high tops irritated my skin. When that came about, I asked folks what dress shoes I should get. The answer was Rockport. I highly recommend them, either in the lace-up wingtips or in the slip-on loafers. I currently have two pairs of loafers, but now my work is pretty much limited to sitting all the time. I wore the lace-up wingtips for years and never had problems with them, even though I spent a lot of time on my feet. Forget ordering online because you really want to try on the ones you will buy.

I also like Rockport shoes for comfort.
I'll second the Rockports. I've heard that their quality has slipped recently, but you can't prove it by the Rockports I've purchased.

I've heard good things about Eccos, but I've gotten better deals on Rockports when I've been in the market, so I haven't tried them. I'll also recommend the men's shoe department at Dillard's in Norman; they once replaced a set of Rockports I was wearing (one was squeaking) free of charge, and not at my request--and I'm not even sure if I'd bought them there (I told the lady, but she insisted on replacing them).

Johnston and Murphy is where it's at. I like them a lot better than Cole Haan. There is a Johnston and Murphy store at the outlet mall right down from the Cole Haan store. That's where I buy mine.

I only own one pair of dress shoes and they are Ecco. Excellent shoes, but I wear boots most of the time and currently all mine are lacers. For years my daily footwear in the school business was mostly Justin ropers.

A good source right now might be Cabela's - go to their online site and check out the "Bargain Cave" section. That's where I get nearly all my foortwear now, and their stuff is usually marked down 40 - 60%.

Find a shoe you like the look of and put in whatever insoles the nurses and doctors use.

I used to have a pair of Steve Maddens that sucked until I threw in a nice insole. Going up and down rooftops, though, they didn't last more than a year.

Most of the professionals I know sit on their ass 8hrs a day so finding nice shoes to stand in all day might be a challenge.

Thanks to all who have commented. I see a lot of shoes I like the look of, but I need to find the time to go irritate a salesman trying them all on. I have a pair of Dockers oxford type shoes that will get me by for the time being, but have noticed in the past that at about the 6-7 hour mark they start to really irritate me. I've never had to dress professionally in my life, excepting Class A inspections, so this is all pretty new to me. Since I start school next week, I should have started on all this sooner, but thought I'd have time over the holiday break to do it. Little did I know that Mrs. would have me hooked up the whole time. Thanks again for all the input.

Unfortunately we don't have a walking company in the mall anymore they used to carry the Pikolinos, if you can find a store that carries them try them. I was surprised I bought a pair of these.

Although I do sit at a desk most days I've had a couple of very long days on my feet and these were very comfortable.

I'd also suggest looking at Carolina boots work shoes. I worked 12 hour shifts on a concrete shop floor and I swear the Carolina boots were the most comfortable work boots I ever owned.
