The quality of facilities and versatility of the range would probably dictate the willingness of most people to travel.

I wouldn't travel more than 15 minutes for your standard indoor range however I do travel about 25-30mins to get to Lexington to shoot everything I have, destroy defunct random objects, and shoot some clays. 25-30mins is my outer limit for travel.

I would travel as far as i need to for shooting.
That said, cover is nice but not necessary.
A bathroom is nice.
Steel targets are a must for 100 and out to at least 300, preferably 500 or more.
Separate areas for pistol and rifle.
Bench area separate from a prone or standing area.
Allow rapid fire.

20 minutes depending on lane availability, price, and restrictions. Any more than that and I might as well drive out to my parents farm. Plus they have beer there.

A tree to shoot from would be a big FAIL.
Too many people that would get hurt.. then you have the GI Joe type city boys that would possibly shoot something in the next county just to see if they could.

I live in yukon and to shoot past 200 yards i must go to eufaula or the red river..
I have no qualms driving 60 miles to shoot at a buddies or lexington..
I do not like crowds at indoor ranges.

I will not join something that requires a membership.
I have been 2 times to membership shooting ranges.. just does not agree with me.
Bunch of stuffed shirt fatties that think they are better than you and that lane is marked for them!!
Even when i was there 2 hours before anyone and set up my targets ...

You guys can have your membership shooting ranges.
Sorry .. sore spot..

I belonged to OKC gun club until I moved out to the Tuttle/Bridge Creek area. Then I joined TCGC as it was much more convenient. I am now a life member at TCGC, I go out and shoot, act as RSO when needed, do welding projects for the club and generally stay completely out of the politics of it all. I've had some of the same experiences as swampratt and can certainly understand his position. I really enjoy helping with the kids programs when we host them. I was out for the FFA shotgun shoot recently and allowed some of the participants to shoot the weapons I had brought that day with their parents permission. Check on liability insurance costs when you open your range, that gets expensive. If you are seriously considering that, you might want to either get a manufacturers license or partner with someone who already has one and offer ammo at the range. I talked with a couple of different indoor range owners in the Atlanta GA area and that is their business plan. They reload the brass left on the floor and offer it to range users. As to how far I would travel, 50 or 60 miles for a good safe place to shoot long range, up to a mile. I now travel about 25 miles routinely to shoot. Good luck with the idea...
