So I watched the movie tonight with my 16 year old son. Great movie overall but I have one big issue. The issue was around killing the "detainees" or letting them go. Why didn't they just take the people with them until they were able to reach a safe distance and call for evac? It seemed like a simple solution so I must be missing something.

I don't want to criticize our fall men, that is the farthest from my thoughts. I'm an 11b and don't want to give that impression. I was hoping that someone who has read the book can shed some light on why they didn't opt for that path.

I thought the same thing after me and my wife saw the movie. I assume they just never thought there would be a delay in the extraction. Anyway, I don't think the goat headers would have had a hard time climbing up the mountain. That's what they do often, so really don't think that was the issue of not taking them up. But who really knows.

I think the problem is the "herders" would have made it as difficult as possible to move them. Also it would have negatively impacted the teams situational awareness. there are a lot of negatives that go with taking them hostage, and few positives.

In the movie, the kid runs down to the village and in the book they all "run" up the mountain. As an academic response to this situation I would have voted to tie their arms behind them and then those arms together in a group. It would have slowed them down tremendously and then thinking outside the box, as the units "medic", I might have morphined one of them up to make him a further burden on the other two to allow time to get the f out of there. I would also have serious reservations about neutralizing a kid but morphine in the land of the poppy wouldn't make me lose too much sleep. At least everybody lives through the day. Academically, these were my thoughts after reading the book several months ago and then seeing the movie.
