They are doing DOT Construction OT work. They are "ON" Duty and being paid by DOT to slow people down in these areas, and hand out reminders to people that refuse to slow down. They work on their days off, and are paid by DOT.

Regardless of who pays them, the taxpayers ultimately foot the bill. Sadly, this is a self-imposed "stupid tax". If people would slow down without the trooper's presence, we wouldn't be paying for this. They don't, so that trooper is a living, breathing "here's your sign" for motorists. :(

After working construction for a couple of years I would have been happy to pay these fellas out of my pocket to get the traffic slowed down. When you are trying do do your job and are looking down and some jerk-wad comes close enough to knock the rake handle out of your hands it gets to be a bit nerve racking. :)

There has been several times i wish i had a LE sitting around when working but the 2 memorable times was once i was 40 feet in the air working on a light with a 6 inch beacon light and 2 12 inch round led lights flashing along with my rear flashers on my truck and this lady pulls up within 2 feet of the back of my truck honking her horn for me to get out of her way when all she had to do was go around me, the other myself and a coworker was in a 4 feet deep by 16 inch ditch putting a water line together and heard a engine riv up a few times then as we turned our heads all whe seen was the bottom of a car go flying over the top of us the idiot had ran over our barricade and hit the dirt mound and flew over the ditch with us in it.

I was driving a Freightliner with a 53' box North, on U.S. 23, in Michigan. Single lane due to construction, when one of the construction worker jackholes steps backward right in front of me. I stomped the brake so hard, I stalled the truck, even though my left foot was coming down on the clutch at the same time (or a nanosecond later). That sonuvabitch didn't even have the courtesy to wave an apology. Since then, I can't help but wonder if a few more of them got clipped, maybe they'd do a little watching out themselves. Just wonder, I'm sane (barely).

Your alert and safe driving saved a life, good job.

I was driving in Michigan. a couple of weeks ago. I saw a sign about the penalty for killing a highway worker. I don't remember the details but it included some serious prison time.

I was on an asphalt lay down crew, just North of Marland, I was driving a truck. While I was backing to the lay down machine a crazy driver in a car came flying into the work zone. He was going so fast he cut between me and the lay down machine then into the ditch and came back onto the road almost striking a steel wheel roller.

Sadly that kind of crap is not uncommon.

This is how people on work crews die. Just a couple of weeks before this incident we had a worker that lost both legs, plus many months in the hospital, I have no idea of the rehab time. He was unloading equipment and a car crashed through the barricades and smashed him against his trailer. Sad way to have things happen. So if the cars wont slow down, and LEO are needed then add it to the job cost and tell the folks who blast through the work zones.
