Given that my neighbor shot my house recently (story here) and I refuse to deal with another security company and monthly payments, I'm looking into 8 camera security systems.

Ideally, I'd like 4 dome and 4 bullet cameras and around 700TVL or more for decent resolution. Whatever system I get needs to be accessible remotely via phone and motion activated. Audio would be nice for the dome cameras, but not a necessity. Power over Ethernet would be nice, but doesn't provide that much more for the money.

What are y'all's suggestions? Any companies to avoid specifically.

Do it yourself with a decent computer (i5 chip or above), a POE switch, and freeware like iSpy. I'd recommend Dahua cameras. They have some really good quality HD video cameras for decent money. You can run the Ethernet cable yourself through your attic. I'd suggest buying a 1000' roll, terminations, and a crimp tool. You can have the files backed up to a NAS or even to the cloud, like Amazon, if you have a good internet connection. Doing it yourself will end up with a MUCH better system for the money.

I know there have been many threads started for this, although its always interesting to see what new out there. I plan on adding a system as well.

There was a thread a while back that had links to all the components so even someone like me could figure it out!

I have installed several systems, and they are fairly straight forward.

I usually but the standalone systems, and install my own hard drive.
My last 2 I used solid state drives, and they have been working fine.

I buy most of my stuff from;

I don't have any connection to them other then have had good luck there.

Thanks, Old Timer. I've considered making my own system, but working in IT during the day, the idea of plug n play is too much of a draw as the last thing I want to deal with after work is more electronic's issues.

People don't walk up in my driveway and try to open vehicle doors anymore once they see the dim red glow of the LEDs on the cameras. It was comical to review the camera footage as they'd take step towards a vehicle look up and then turn and walk away.

It is also pretty comical for the ones who don't notice them. Lol Had a pretty good one, they didn't know that everything they said was picked up and recorded as well.

Im looking into some cameras currently too...Ive been looking at some 3M resolution ones. I really want a few to PTZ, but am having a hard time finding any.

A prebuilt system would be easier than having a PC, buying a POE switch , plus software to run it all....
