Am I overreacting to a "hypothetical" situation?

Lets say "hypothetically", my brother in law was arrested and charged with a crime that has the adjectives "lewd acts", "child", and "felony" in the description.

My wife and I have "hypothetically" talked about it and decided that it's best for him to not be around our 4 and 2 year old unless he's found innocent.

"Hypothetically" her entire family is pissed at us now.

Are we overreacting?

EDIT: Spelling :)
Heck no, you are most certainlynot over reacting. Your primary responsibility is to keep your children safe. Anything or anyone that says you're overeating is not sane .

Innocent until proven guilty and beyond a reasonable doubt are standards the legal system uses in these cases, for good reasons. However, when it comes to your kids' safety, I would use a much different standard... along the lines of "in order to be allowed around my kids, you have to prove to my satisfaction that you are not a threat to them."

"hypothetically" speaking, this is a very sound reaction.

I would wait to see if the "alleged" allegations are dropped

If the "hypothetical" in-law is convicted, I would wait till he's served his debt to society, and gotten some sort of treatment for it, before I would let him anywhere near my children. If he was convicted, I think it would become a non-issue, because he'll probably be put away for a loooong time...
