I know the transfer fee is whatever the FFL wants to charge, but I was wondering if they got a break on shipping costs.

I had to leave 2 of my handguns with my little brother and want them back with me in AK. I know they have to go through an FFL for shipping, but I'm not really sure of the process and costs beyond that. Can you guys enlighten me?

Handguns must be sent 2nd day air or overnight, I don't know of anyone giving a price break to FFL dealers, check with all the carriers for the best price.

Anyone can send it, An FFL has to receive it.

Nope only FFL's are allowed to use the USPS for handguns. Everyone else has to use a "Common Carrier" i.e.. UPS or Fedex.
I have saved money before by using a FFL to ship using the USPS.
It was cheaper to pay the FFL fee and ship though the USPS, than to ship 2nd day air.

2nd day air is how distributors ship guns to retailers. FFL holders can ship USPS ground, but must have their FFL on file at the local post office beforehand. It is much cheaper to ship USPS priority mail than it is to ship 2nd day air. No one gives FFL holders "a break" on shipping, but they can charge you whatever they wish for shipping and handling.

Got ya. So, what's the average cost to ship one? I know there's no hard answer, but I'm trying to figure out which way to go. It may be cheaper to just fly down and get it than to ship both guns after FFL fees and shipping to AK, but I want to get a ball park figure before doing a lot of calling around.
