Could he have an airsoft Thompson? Airsoft pellets are 6.5 mm.

This one's actually listed as "6mm cal"

... maybe he is just an old airsofter? Or maybe he traded his old bringback 1911, Garand, or carbine or something to someone for a 6mm Thompson SMG.

It would seem likely that were he REALLY in possession of a REGISTERED weapon worth $15,000--$20,000 in today's market, he would at least know what caliber it is chambered for (seeing as how he would have had to register it). I think he is either delusional, or he came up with one from a long time back.

You might be surprised how may people are in possession of Class III firearms that have No Idea what they are worth in today's market.

Very true. One of my buddies at the gun club has a Colt M16 we were talking about one day. He said he and his dad bought five of them in the early eighties before the ban for $500.00 each (before tax stamps). He said he had been shooting the one since they got it and the rest were NIB in the safe. Another person asked what they were worth and he said he didn't know, but guessed about 5k each. I told him he needed to do some research on current prices.

The 1986 MG Ban just stopped domestic production of MG's for civilians. Tax stamps for MG's have been required since 1934. If his 5 M16's are un-stamped they are worth 10 years in jail.

I think you misread my post. The rifles were $500.00 each, not including the $200.00 cost each for the stamps. He's a MG collector. He also has a BAR and a 1928 Thompson.

Perhaps I did misread your post, but what you said came across as if you did not need stamps in the early 80's. Here is the part I am talking about:

"He said he and his dad bought five of them in the early eighties before the ban for $500.00 each (before tax stamps)".

I see what you mean now that you elaborated, but I took it like you meant before the 86 ban was also before tax stamps were needed.

All is well.

Tell your buddy that if he wants to sell the other 5, I'll give him 6K each in cash!!
And do all the paperwork!!!

Haha.

In my dreams!!!

However, he had to have tax stamps, even in the 80s.
But, 500 each including the stamps sounds about right for that time period.
Can you believe it, but some dealers GAVE AWAY FOR FREE drop in auto sears when you bought an AR!!!

Where is my wayback machine!!!!
