Monitored residential alarms in Tulsa, waste of money?

There are several "smart phone" security systems that actually work great. So you can monitor yourself. You get smart phone notifications with a prompt to call 911 if it is tripped. Then you can access the cameras. Then some like the iris at lowes has optional monitoring with no contract so if you are out of the country or in the woods you can turn it on when you need it.

My MIL in Edmond (technically, North OKC) had her monitored alarm go off at 2:00 am. Being alone in the house she wanted police to come check it out. It was 18 minutes from call to door, which in that situation seemed like an hour. The officer apologized that it took so long and said he was at NWE and Merridian when he was notified. She is 3 blocks north of quail springs. It just seems crazy to me that he was the closest available officer. Then again, I have no clue how assignments work. Fortunately, my nephew didn't shut the back door all the way when he was playing earlier and the wind blew it open, so no real emergency. Opened our eyes to the process.

Its hard to imagine a burglar hanging around in a house with an ear-splitting siren going off knowing the alarm MIGHT be monitored. The police probably won't get there that fast since there are so many false alarms, I'm guessing over 90 percent, but it gives the homeowner peace of mind that their cell phones and the cops will be called if something happens.

No concern here about the cameras and NVRs I have. Night vision is pretty good too. It's about the city's response (or lack thereof) to the alarms. The only usefulness I see at this point is for fire. I'm pretty sure the TFD will respond. I hope.

My monitored system with Guardian Security in Tulsa is $35/mo. Includes monitoring and insurance for the gear...we don't pay extra for any kind of repair or upgrade to the system. We also get a pretty good discount on our home insurance for having the alarm. I think cameras are a great idea and you can get them for as low a $40-50 each. Most of the cameras will go real-time with your cell phone and I'm pretty sure they all have sound...some you can speak to whomever is near the camera.

I got a NEST camera recently. It has excellent night vision. It detects motion or sound and I get a notification in about 3 seconds. Also if there is a family member home, I can talk to them through the camera. Its wireless other than a power cord. Operates on wifi. Heres a screenshot I just saved from my computer monitor.

Monitored security systems are still good, no matter where you are. You might get lucky and have an officer on the next street over. More importantly, you want your fire detection & carbon monoxide monitored.

I live 30 minutes away from where I work. My alarm trips, they dispatch county. They could be 20 minutes away from my house and still beat me there.

I hate alarms. My parents have had one for over 10 years, my grandparents have had one since they became at all popular for regular folks. Both of theirs have gone off multiple times. Never for a legitimate reason.

My parents went off for no reason in the middle of the night last year. Better odds of killing them from a heart attack than anything else. My god that thing is insanely loud.

Plus I have a big scary black dog. Just what I need is Barney Fife testing JHP loads on my best friend "investigating" my alarm while I'm at work. That seems to happen too often.

I even fawking hate smoke alarms. Yeah yeah, preach to me. I built a new house in 2009 and it had like a dozen of them wired in. Went off at like 3 a.m. one morning (for no reason) and I came un-fawking-glued. Fell out of the bed. When I re-gained composure I disabled every ******* one of them and went to work tired. I do not do well being woken up to noises like that for no reason.

My current house has one but I do not use it. I am, however, about to do the camera thing.

We had monitored alarm for years and the one time the alarm went off and my wife and I were both at work, I told the alarm company to notify the police. Then I drove home from work (about 10 minute drive), went in and checked the house from top to bottom. After checking everything out I was out on the porch wondering if the police would show up and about the time I gave up on them I see a Tulsa police car moseying down the street. There was probably a thirty minute period from when the police were notified and when they showed up. I decided then that a monitored service in Tulsa is a total waste of money. The Tulsa PD apparently does not put a lot of urgency in responding to alarms in a timely manner. Two pro thieves could have wiped me out in 30 minutes. Still have the alarm and still use it but we don't waste the money on monitoring.

Move to the suburbs. In Bixby they'd be there in 3 minutes and have shot your neighbor's golden retriever in 4 minutes.

New developments in the case of Bixby Police officer who shot and killed a family dog. The Bixby Police chief decided Officer Cory Forister used deadly force on the golden retriever last week, when other, non-lethal options were available.

Chief Anthony Stephens reprimanded Forister and placed him on restricted, administrative duty until he completes a one-day Humane Society course on assessing whether dogs are aggressive.

In fact, all officers must take the course.

Police Chief Anthony Stephens: We're gonna take this training and apply it to the current practice and procedure and see if there are changes that need to be made. We'll move on from this point."

Fluppy was tied to a fence in the family's backyard, when Forister shot it three times while on an alarm call. He says he was defending himself.

Fluppy's owners say they aren't sure what to think about the chief's decision.

Do you have screen shots of the night vision?
