This was always one of my favorites, so much truth in the song. Lots of people have made mistakes and live with it for as long as they live, even thou they paid for it and have changed.

I'm a sucker for perfect opening lines/verses.

each night i leave the bar room when it's over/not feelin any pain at closin' time/but tonight your memory found me much to sober/couldn't drink enough to keep you off my mind

first thing i remember knowin/was that lonesome whistle blowin

if we make it through december/everythings gonna be alright i know/it's the coldest time of winter/and i shiver when i see the falling snow

Merle had that knack for getting the point out and jerking the listener into paying attention.

Plus if you don't write at least a few songs sympathetic to criminals, you're not a country songwriter.
Or trains, or coal mines, or divorce.
RIP Merle.

I got to see him in concert probably 23 or 24 years ago and I thought that was the greatest comcert I have ever seen.

My favorite singer of all time.

Merle Haggard, An Okie From Muskogee-I remember that from Vietnam and how it rang patriotic when people were degrading the military at that time. He earned my respect but more publicity is given "Prince" than Merle Haggard and Haggard gave so much to this country. But that's the way our society is, PC all the way. We've had military lay down their lives and they were soon forgotten but this guy "Prince" deserves little but receives much.

I was working at the Holiday Inn in Muskogee during the summers of 1967 and 1968. Merle Haggard was playing in the club there every night, and became quite fond of one of the waitresses. Her husband apparently wasn't a fan and went to Merle's room, knocked politely, and when Merle opened the door, broke a beer bottle on his head. I guess that is where the line; "we don't make a party out of loving" came from. Aside from that incident, he was very nice to everyone that worked there.
