Was Lurker over the top in the way he approached it, God yes! But, does that make a difference to the substance and discrepancies that were originally posted across multiple forums?
If there is no substance to the claims and his statements were factually accurate then it isn't a big deal to say that. If they aren't factually accurate but were as innocuous as some claim than it really shouldn't be an issue for DH to explain his misremembering.
As long as it remains "cleared up privately", it reeks of political cover-ups and this will continue be a thing for some*. It's just the way it is.
As a current member of the US Armed Forces, I am dubious about the situation and will continue to be so as I feel that those that embellish their actual service are worse than those that never actually served or made it out of initial training because those who actually served in a meaningful capacity should be proud of whatever service they provided to their country or the people of other countries and making false statements in a way diminishes the contributions made by those that served beside you and is dishonorable.
*Actual service members are more likely to be believed by those that didn't serve and sound more convincing in their lies because those that didn't serve are morel likely pre-disposed to believe they are trustworthy and the member will be less likely tripped up over details pertaining to service as they actually lived it.
