Anyone tried Costco's ribs yet?

Yup. The back ribs and St. Louis were all $2.99/lb.

<edit> BTW, guests last night are huge fans of Tulsa's Burn Co BBQ and they said there was not even a comparison, my ribs were better. :D

That was my first reaction, then after some more thought, I have no issue going to a steak house and paying $25-$30 for a USDA choice cut + drinks and appetizers, leaving a hundred dollar bill on the table for two diners.
Put into that perspective, $17.99 a pound for USDA prime is pretty cheap.

I've not had a $10/lb (or less if on sale) ribeye that would get me to pay that. Ribeye is my favorite steak. Don't know that I've ever had a bad one now that I think about it.

I wasn't impressed with Joe's. Mine are better, for sure. ;) Surely some folks out there make better ribs than I, but I haven't found 'em yet.
Was that Oklahoma Joe's or Joe's KC? The one here in KC has been consistently awesome. Especially their ribs and burnt ends.

BTW, I'll give credit where it's due, not "home team" aligned. Texas brisket has it all over anything in KC.

We went to Cosco yesterday for the first time. They did have some nice looking meat. We normally buy ribeye steaks but they had some prime New York Strips that had enough marbling in them they almost looked like Wagyu beef. Going to reverse sear those guys soon.

Yup, this is the place I went:

I-35 and 119th in Olathe. It probably wasn't the best time of day, I think it was 3 or 4PM, but... it just wasn't "great". It wasn't bad, don't get me wrong. I think I got some platter with ribs, pulled pork and sausage. It was just OK. I found Q39 to be much better, personally. It isn't a "traditional" BBQ joint, but I found the food overall to have better flavor and seemed fresher and everyone in our party raved over it. At Joe's (Oklahoma cum Kansas City), everyone found it to be "good", but that was essentially it.

I know everyone is spoiled and think they do better cue than the neighbors, and everyone also cooks to their own taste - but I'll take my backyard pellet-smoker ribs anyday. I took some to work last year, and when we ate them, everyone raved, but I was truly embarrassed to serve them. They weren't good at all, I found them to be on-par with most commercial BBQ places - in other words, they were about like Rib Crib. So... I've refrained from taking them again, thinking maybe it was the transport, or I didn't cook them long enough, or something. But one of the ladies at work came over this weekend and brought her 19 y/o son to shoot some guns and when we were done I pulled off some ribs I'd had on the smoker all afternoon. I told her, "Remember how you loved my ribs at work, but I said they were crap?" She affirmed this, and stated she didn't know why I was so upset about the ribs I had shared, then she tried the ones I had just pulled off the smoker - and she immediately understood what I meant. I don't know if it is because my technique has just improved a bit (which it has), or the circumstances (fresh off the smoker vs 2+ hours later, wrapped in foil), or better meat these days, or what, but she "got the picture". Like I said above, I took it as a great compliment when they told me my ribs were hands' down better than Burn Co. Now, I've never been to Burn Co, myself, but the way people here rave about 'em, I gotta figure they're pretty good.

What I ate at Joe's I found to be mediocre, but it wasn't bad, per se. Just... nothing to write home about. I have referred a ton of people to Q39, however.

I've been told by a number of people I need to open a BBQ joint, or a BBQ shack, or even just a roadside stand, or take orders or whatever - but honestly, I know the one way to ruin a favorite hobby is to start doing it for money. lol. No way would I make it profitable enough to be worth my time, and I don't want the pressure of having to do it day in and day out. We actually COULD use a decent BBQ stand in this town (all we have that comes to mind is Rib Crib - blech!), but I wouldn't be manning it myself, and when you pay someone else to do it... well... really, what would be the point???

So there's my BBQ soliloquy of the day. :teach:

OK, first of all the 119th location doesn't do their meat in house ( I could be wrong about that). Pretty sure they get it from the gas station (47th & Mission Rd). I've never seen much of a line at the 119th spot but the line at the Mission Rd location is down the block.

Secondly, I do like Q39 but they are WAY too hipster for me anymore. I've tried multiple times lately to get food from them and they act like it's a privilege for me to eat there. I've had them refuse to serve me burnt ends because I wanted them to go. I've also sent folks there for the burnt ends and they told them they couldn't have them because they were saving them for later. WTF? You have an item but are saving them for later!?! The ribs there were pretty sad the one time I had them. I refuse to spend any more of my money there. Plenty of awesome BBQ joints in KC.

BTW, the ribs and sandwiches the wife brought home from Jack Stack were pretty frickin' good! And the beans...forget about it! Nobody, and I mean nobody, can hold a candle to Jack Stack's beans. In fact, I'm having their beans and my homemade German potato salad tonight for my "lunch".

Not rib related, but try the chicken brats from SAMs club if you like different types of sausages. I'm not a big pork sausage fan but the Chicken brats were awesome.

I cooked a full rack of spares yesterday and they were the best ribs I've had yet. It's a good sign when some of the small end bones are left in the foil when you put them on to firm up with sauce.

I could imagine them bringing the stuff from another location. That may not be the case, but it could be.

Q39. I will admit is pretty trendy/hipster. I too am flabbergasted by that kind of behavior. I'd let 'em know and wouldn't go back, either.

Jack Stack's burnt ends on the other hand, are awesome. :D Been a few years... might have to go back.
