Never had one, kinda thinking about getting one even though now is not a good time to be buying a seasonal item like this. Could I pick up something good for say 1-2k for the family to play on? Doesn't have to be super fast or anything, just descent looking and dependable.

anything that cheap will likely be pretty old; better make sure to check the compression and do a test-ride before you buy. Not sure how much you generally know about boats/cars that will allow you to buy, maintain and operate on of these things in confidence; but feel free to ask specific questions further if needed. I'm going to guess that any "descent looking and dependable" 4-stroke will be out of the question for that budget; so even more important to go over the craft before buying.

I have a little experience and as usual opinions, if any of it might help. Had several since the 90's, all were purchased used. They are a dirt bike on the water, a blast even for us older people. Wifey enjoys the independence of being her own driver and doing what she wants as far as sharp turns or trying to slow down or jump over larger boat wakes. Lake wind warnings have a whole new meaning, time to get them out and have some fun.

I realize it might upset the budget, but depending on your family, especially ages, buying a pair of them might have a lot of advantages and will definitely provide a lot more fun. Wife and I can take off and ride down the lake 20 miles and back. If there were any problems, we know where each other of are are and do not have to worry "did they take a long trip or could there be a problem" will cross your mind with only one.

If you have younger family members, they can get out of sight in a very short period of time. Our Yamaha VX Cruisers will easily run 55 MPH and they are just the plain-jane models, not hot rods. I had a two stroke Sea-Doo that would run 76MPH a few years back, but it was a little temperamental at low speeds.

The basic rules and regulations are here. https://www.dps.state.ok.us/lp/lps.htm

Typically the "Two Person" ones take practice to haul two adult sized people, not much different than balancing a two seater bicycle at low speeds. Three seaters work well for riding two average adult people.

I have owned Kawasaki's, Sea-Doo's, and Yamaha's. Just personal preference, but I like the Yamaha's better overall they are better for just puttering around at 30-40MPH or so. The two stroke Sea-Doos were very fast, but were not as nice to ride at lower speeds. The Kawasaki's I had were ok, but just did not have the right feel for me.

Most of them require very little maintenance other than making sure they are drained well before winter and keeping a battery tender on them if you are not riding often and for the winter.

Especially if you have ever been a motorcycle rider, and if you like the water, you and your family will most likely enjoy them. Keep us updated.

One Im looking at is a 1995 Sea Doo GTX 750 3 seater. The other is unknown year Kawasaki XJ 2 seater.
I'm pretty mechanically inclined, just never messed with skis or boats. Only motorcycles, quad, dirtbike, cars.
Any opinion on those 2 mentioned?

My father in law bought a used Sea Doo several years back from this guy in South OKC who bought used ones and rebuilt them. He would give you a sheet showing the compression ratio of each cylinder, and all the new parts he installed on it. He cleaned them up REALLY well and the engine compartment looked darn near brand new and my FIL paid about $2700 for his and it looked great and would go over 70 mph. The problem with jet skis is, after some hard riding you can't just sit on one and chill out and relax . You'll probably fall over if you aren't moving forward and like another poster said, you really need two of them. I thought about a jet ski but I am older and more inclined to get a small Sea Doo jet boat for my family.

I made an offer on the GTX pending riding it on the water tomorrow. It's pretty clean and seems nice, I hope it runs good for a few years. Then we will probably trade it off for something else

If you are only going to own one, I recommend 3-seater. Heavier and won't beat you up as bad, easier to mount, and more stable in the water, and friendlier to a variety of riders in the family; probably a little safer too. I am a Kawi-freak but I'd choose the SeaDoo for what you're wanting if it was down to those choices.

I can relax on my ski, but it is a stable, sit down model. Seems like you are referring to the stand-up versions? Some of the newer, larger personal water craft have lots of creature comforts like a road-bike vs say a dirt bike. Also, last I heard, the coast guard prohibited any stock craft from being capable from the factory of going over 70mph. This could have changed but I doubt it...you certainly can do mods and get them faster, but remember how in-accurate marine speedos are...if your 20yr old ski says you are doing 70, you are probably doing 59 :)

Does my 14 yr old need a boating license?

Not sure but I have in the back of my head that drivers of PWC must be 16yrs or older...I'm sure the laws are different everywhere but the owner's manuals generally say they are not intended for people under 16...if I had a responsible, properly trained 14yo, I'd prob let them drive under certain conditions.
