How does one decide to do a build like this? Its cool, dont get me wrong...but definitely different.
And why not 300BO if you're using .308 projectiles? And seems like alot of scope and MOA in the base for whats generally a "short range" round. I'm intrigued for sure.

I have a friend that shoots a high end 300BLO AR footprint rifle. My wife will not allow AR or AK rifles in the house. She never says a word about my other firearms which are mostly bolt guns, straight pulls, and one Magnum Research semi auto 22. She does not complain about the handguns either. Sandy Hook made this a reality as she is a retired school teacher and was off the charts about the SH shooting after it happened. So I decided to build a bolt gun using the 762x39 round to compete with the 300BLO. He is not high on the round and believes the 300 is far superior in every way. My gunsmith believes just the opposite. He has long felt that if one loads for a 762x39 it will make a more accurate rifle than the 300. So we got together and came up with this build. With regard to the 20moa rail, it was already bought and paid for by me a yr ago from another project so we used it for that reason. Granted I don't need that much adjustment however it doesn't effect the ranges this rifle will be shot at in any way either. I appreciate your interest in this build Adams.:thumbup3:

Pretty interesting for sure.
Your gunsmiths belief that the 7.62x39 is more accurate than 300BO...what are his thoughts about a 308 projectile in a 7.62x39 case? Seems you take a bit of that theory away when you swap up the projectile. I hope you dont think I'm criticizing your build, thats not the case at all. Its very cool and unique for sure. I'm not that creative, so my "precision" gun is a .308 haha.

I certainly don't think of your comments as being critical in any way. His thoughts on the 308 are that if I ever want to convert it to a standard 308 all he will need to do is rechamber it for me. I liked that idea. He said he believes with a little work there should not be a 300BLO in semi auto ever out shoot this rifle. I don't honestly know if that is true or not but my friend is a very good shot and hand loads for his 300. I am going to his place tomorrow. I want him to hold it, handle it, shoulder it, and then Im going to see if he will go with me to the range later in the week!!!!!!

Late 70's thru the mid 80's, there were a handful of folks around me, like you Sir, who liked building such. The *x39 is a great cartridge for accuracy, economy, and it is a lethal combo for most mid sized large game. The 300 Whisper (Blackout,,,what-ever) has come along in the line of history doing the same thing. Playing around, getting funsies and good performance for all. The old *x39 tinkerers canned more than a few barrels (mea culpa). Back then, we were more interested in performance than being stealthy. lol

I am going to give full credit on this thing to my gunsmith. He is 79 yrs old but doesnt look it or act it. He has been at this for 39 yrs too. Maybe he passed through the era you made mention of in the above statement??? Whatever I look forward to playing around with this too! tnks for your input.

7.62x39 is a base for quite possibly the most accurate cartridge ever created - 30PPC (or 30 Stewart) (7.62x39 -> 220 Russian -> 6PPC -> 30 Stwewart)

I would stick to proven cases, powders and projectiles from the benchrest crowd - and you might have yourself a real shooter. The "case" definitely has the potential to shoot with the best of them.

tnks MoB the above inspires me a bit more. My rifle and loading skills are not at the level of the record level but it will make me a better shooter in the long run as I play with this. Im getting excited now.
