I tried it once when I was in Saudi Arabia (shh!). No internet back then and, of course, no literature to turn to. I had to go by what other guys said they were doing. It was definitely alcoholic, but quite nasty tasting. I did better asking my wife to send a care package with a Scope bottle filled with 151 that was dyed green. She also sent me some Popular Mechanics magazines that did not have the innards of a Popular Mechanics. Know what I mean? Know what I mean? Nudge, Nudge

Any tips on making the mead? I'm thinking I need to back sweeten mine cause it's harsh and strong when Ive make it

Have you tried doing melomels or flavored meads?

As for the mead... 10lbs of honey, 4 gallons of water and my yeast starter. Keep it closed off (air lock) and let it go for as long as you can stand it. Mead has a slow turn over. Mine sets for at least six months.

As for back sweetening, I would look at adding fruit or slightly increase the amount of honey. Make small batches so if you make a piss you can toss it with little regret.

Same basic set up as most of us, plastic bucket and carboy. The wine I make is tastes better than anything from the stores and for less than three bucks a bottles its hard to beat

I made boat loads of both wine and beer in Saudi. I got quite good at it and got the Nick name brew master general. When I came back I quit so much easier to buy it. I use to have about 20 gallons bottled and finishing under the bed at any given time. Once had a batch of champagne exploded that was a mess

I've made wine for the last 40 years or so, small batches at a time, seldom over 5 gallons. The best wine I've ever made was made with the wine stock. I have made some good fruit wines and some beer ass well. Experimented with fermenting grains as well without adding any hops, drinkable but not that great. I just enjoy the experimenting with it. As for equipment, I have several hydrometers and a couple of the refractometers, several different sizes and types of fermentation locks as well. You don't have to spend big bucks to make wine.
