Does anybody on here shoot any of the SCRAP club shoots? I used to go shoot out there and now they have quite a few shooting matches monthly. I was wondering if any of you guys shoot any of them?
I've shot a couple of matches there. Steel Challenge. I usually end up with a conflict with another match or I would shoot there more. Nice group to shoot with.
Any advice on the steel challenge? What do most people use, .22 pistol? Carbine? Is it just plate racks? Its only about 40 miles from my house so that is part of the draw.

Steel Challenge has 8 different setups consisting of 5 targets of various sizes or distances. Most are shot in any order but will have a designated "stop" plate which will be the last plate you have to hit.

A bit of everything is used in Steel Challenge but rimfire seems to be the most popular. It varies on where you go, but a .22 Ruger MK with an optic is the most common, followed by a .22 AR or 10/22 with an optic. I usually shoot 2 guns. I've shot my 9mm M&P with irons, M&P 15-22 with Optic, 22/45 Ruger with iron sites, and PCC with a Suppressed MPX SBR and a 9MM AR15. Centerfire pistol is from the holster, everything else is from low ready. I suggest 5 magazines of 10 rounds or less. 3 or more if you have 15round+ magazines. I'd say shoot what you are comfortable with. Be comfortable shoot from a holster if take a centerfire. If you are unfamiliar with shooting from a holster in competition, make sure you talk to a match director or range officer. I'm sure they will work with you. Ranges are run "cold", Unloaded guns until you are advised by the RO to load and make ready. Take gun bags for your gun(s) to bring them to the line or leave them in the holster.
There is no (most stages) or very limited (1 stage) movement in steel challenge.
You shoot 5 strings of fire in most stages throwing out your worst run. It gives you a good chance to learn and fix mistakes. Everywhere I have shot Steel Challenge has been a good experience with several people willing to help new shooters. They will help reload your magazines if you don't have enough, loan guns, just whatever is needed to help grow the sport.
They only have 2 bays at Duncan. You shoot both stages, reconfigure and shoot again. We only shot 4 stages both times I was there. Very nice guys and they insist that you shoot free your first time out.

Where is SCRAP?
Duncan/Bray area.
Myself and a buddy shoot their USPSA match, 3rd Sunday of the month. Great match, usually 4-5 stages, a mixture of easy AND challenging. The only issue is the bays are dirt and clay that don't drain well, so if it rains a bunch before they will cancel (always check their web site for match info). Great group of guys that run it and shoot there, usually 25-30 shooters at each.

Thanks for the heads up. I've shot there but its been years and never in a match.
