I'm a non-trained shade tree welder. Is there anything special I need to know if I'm welding AR500 steel to spring steel?

Everything I just read on different pages says it's not a problem. Tho you may lose some of the strength in the weld area due to reheating of the weld effected zone.

It'll weld just fine, but the heat affected zone will be soft so your design needs to account for that.
I'd be curious about mechanical fasteners before welding on it.
Guess it would all depend on what your going to use it for. Fastening a holder onto it for a particular reason?
I replaced my garage door spring which broke in half and I have several 3/8"x5" round AR500 plates I was wanting to attach to the spring. I will get better steel feedback with the spring than the T-post system I currently use.
Ahhhh.... be able to SEE it when it gets hit by the flexing of the plate on the spring?

A soft spot that allows a pass-through; worse yet, a soft spot that forms an impact crater, which then causes a ricochet back toward you.
