Wimberley, TX was a nice place 10 years ago I haven't been back but when I stayed there is was nice, I was there for about week for work because I didn't want to stay in the bigger towns.

Lol, Wimberly is were all the old retired Hippies are now. When my wife was working for a neurosurgeon and people would fail a THC screen before getting more pain meds, they were almost always old retirees from Wimberly. It became a running joke.

Do you really want to be directly between Austin and San Antonio? Personally, I would NOT. Most of the people around there live there because of work, and it's the best compromise for them in terms of location. Austin, then Buda, then Kyle, then San Marcos. There will be commuters all the way to San Marcos.

If you didn't need to be in the rat race every morning, I'd go West. How close you want/need to be to Austin will dictate a lot of things. I'd be out West too if it wouldn't make me hate my life every morning and afternoon getting to/from work. Lago vista was on the table for awhile, but I just couldn't stomach the drive. I like Jonestown, but it's tiny and very little going on. I'd also love to be in Burnet, but that's WAY too far to be commuting every day.

Lots of people do the same, but South. Bee caves, dripping springs, etc. Those are South West and still affordable. As you approach Lake Travis from the South (Lakeway, etc), you better be a millionaire, so those are usually out for most folks.

Hit me up anytime if you have questions.

Don't necessarily have to be anywhere in particular. Just looking to spend a few days in the area and thought it might be nice to be in the middle. Maybe west is better.

I agree with most of this...great advice here. I'd add that going East of Austin is a great place to be...reasonable prices and relatively easy access central Austin.

Salt lick is a landmark type place, but isn't amazing. Their sauce is mostly mustard based so be ready for that. The real one in Dripping is in a dry county and BYOB. This can make it pretty fun to visit. During peak times wait can be very long.

Blacks BBQ is awesome, IMHO. Usually low wait and awesome for the money. Of course Franklin is notorious but I've been here for going on 7 years and never got up the motivation to stand in line for hours for it.

If you hear about the Oasis be aware it's a tourist trap. Views are cool but price is high for super mediocre Mexican food. Go to Hula HUT instead if you want to be on the water.

Torchy's of course is good and reasonably priced for tacos but there are TONS of taco places.

I love Hopdoddy for burgers but some think it's overhyped. They are a good enough that HopBunz in Tulsa ripped them off and are still in a lawsuit over it.
For a quicker, cheaper burger P Terrys is my favorite. They were just one place in the Barton Springs area but have exploded in recent years. It's similar to IN and OUT but local and better, IMO.

I'm tired of typing on my phone or I'd go on. lol.

I'm in Leander BTW I'd you ever need anything. Same for you Yukon..

Well, I need some BBQ spots to visit then, that's one of the only ones I've heard of.
There is so much good food in Austin. Here are a few of my favorites:
  • Indian: The Clay Pit
  • Italian: La Traviata, or Taverna
  • Asian: Titaya's Thai
  • Mexican: Curra's Grill (their Enchiladas Con Chile Colorado dish is incredible), El Patio for traditional Tex-Mex, and Torchy's Tacos (breakfast tacos, brisket or barbecoa tacos, and queso are all wonderful)
  • BBQ: soul medicine!
    • Franklin - if you can wait in line, and it's worth it for the experience
    • La Barbecue - somewhat shorter wait than Franklin, and the best brisket on the planet
    • Micklethwait - shortest wait while still being top-class bbq...best side dishes too
    • Terry Black's (on Barton Springs) - the first 3 listed will be sold out early, so this is the best one that'll have bbq later in the day
  • 24 hour restaurant: Magnolia Cafe
  • Burgers: Hopdoddy
  • Pizza: Home Slice
@Larry Morgan, what did I forget?

You got it man. I hit the Blacks on Guadalupe just north of UT.

For 24 hour places Kerby Lane is our goto. My favorite is the original on Kerby Lane.

I can't freaking believe I forgot Home Slice. Even if I go to South Congress for some other reason, when I smell that place I want it.

Oh oh for Italian you can check out Gino's in round rock. Hole in the wall style place. Or mandolas in Central Austin.
