But it's gotta be South Padre, with a quick stop in corpus to visit the Lady Lex.
Blackbeard's on the beach was really good seafood, but kinda touristy.
I bet if you looked you could find better in Port Isabel, before you go across the bridge to Padre.
yaa, I meant 'South'. Was just there last month, hardly anyone there so it was really nice since the weather has been good, and fairly inexpensive too where we stayed not far from the beach. They let me have my dog there too and he dug the beach so much we couldnt get him to leave. Its not a bad drive down there from here either, we dont mind because the wifes brother is in Dallas area and I have people in the Austin and Corpus Cristi areas.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I hate flying, so driving is best. Another thing I have to factor in (personally) is my kids ages, one is 15yrs and the other is 2yrs. I don't mind sleeping in a tent either, but like said not so much for vacation and certainly not with wife and kids. I like the Alabama beach suggestions, I'm going to look into them more. Having to plan around school, I don't really want to hit the college spring break crowds with the kids so that might leave out Padre and possibly Destin. Staying on the beach would be ideal, or at least some sort of beach view from a condo. I found a lot of very good priced condos for Florida on VRBO.com, all the reviews are from real people so you get to see the good and bad. A lot of them are already booked up for months thought. I'll continue looking at your suggestions and thanks for the conversation.

I think you will like the Alabama area. I have nothing against south Texas and I have been all over from Galveston to south Padre. The water does get cleaner the further south you go.
That said. If the wife and kids want to see the pretty blue water then go to Alabama. The water is beautiful and clean all through that area. It is not the dirty brown water like you have in south Texas. The other thing is that from OKC it only takes about an hour longer to get to Gulf Shores AL than it takes to get to South Padre. My wife said that she would never go back to south Texas again after going to the Florida panhandle.

So, you are going to leave On a Friday morning early. Drive 10-12 hours. Have all day Saturday to vacation and then drive all day home on Sunday to be back to work on Monday? Have fun with that.

Could be a lot worse. Leave outta San Fran to Phoenix. Get into Phoenix at noon after driving straight through leaving the Bay area around 7PM and being up since around 8AM. Eat sleep, get up leave out of Phoenix at 9AM and make it to Guthrie straight through. Trip was about 1750 miles the way I went since I went around LA rather than through. Did I mention that I had a dog with me who wanted to stop at every tree he saw to go mark his expanded territory?

The last time I was out there I came back via Reno and then Highway 50 through Nevada and Utah with the same dog. Through Colorado to Denver then down to Pueblo, Guymon and then Guthrie. That was 1850 miles and I stopped twice to sleep, once about 15 miles from the Nevada-Utah state line on Highway 50 and once about ten miles south of La Junta CO. Got about 5 hours of sleep each time in the back seat of the pickup.

One complete day of downtime sounds like a dream and I am sure having a second person capable of driving for even a few hours would make a huge difference.

I drove out to CA as well but did stop in Phoenix for a few days each time so I don't count that as a long trip.

Another one that sucked was driving from Lawton, OK to New York City as well as the return trip. Stopped to sleep once on the way out and back at a rest area in the car with my wife. Thankfully no dog at the time though still almost 1600 miles each way.

The way I look at it is if you can spare a couple days for some time with the family JUMP ON IT. You only live once and the time with the kids in the car will build memories to last a lifetime. Good or bad you will ALWAYS remember the trips, but I bet you won't remember what you and the kids did last wednesday ten or twenty years down the road.

Might drive, stay somewhere for 2 days and then drive back. Just depends on how we can work it out. One full day of chilling on the beach and relaxing, watching the kids do something different and have some fun would be good enough for me. If we stay too long my wife and older daughter will want to go shopping and that's no fun.

When I met my wife in 03' in San Francisco she lived in Tulsa and I lived in Calaveras county CA. We did the long distance thing for about a year til we married then I started splitting my time between the 2 places because my shop was back in CA as well as Des Moines where I also had an interest in another shop. I would drive to Des Moines, spend a few hours sometimes the night, then head on to CA via I-80. I usually try to get a short nap in the car in Salt Lake City or West Wendover some where. I then cut across from Reno to Carson City then up the back way to my place, about 30 minutes from Tahoe. I was still doing that drive prior to Xmas but I'm pretty much thru with Iowa besides playing music there and visiting my kid. My daughter bought me out there. And I'm about to start spending less time in CA when my tour is finished up in the fall after selling out there to my partner. Just getting to be too much. It was fun in the beginning taking a road trip every few months but now it sucks.

on the road...tapatalkn

If you are only staying a short time, I would go to Galveston. It is a fun place and the kids can find lots of shells. Lots of good eats too. The water is just dirty, but it's still a fun place. I don't remember how long it takes me to get there, but it's not bad. I want to say around 8 hours, or so.

Our family has great luck with VRBO. We use every summer for a cabin in Montana. Here is a thought. I spent a week at Greers Ferry Lake in Northwestern Arkansas. Was a great time. I looked in vrbo and there are some nice options for lake front homes for not too much money. If you have a $1500 budget you can get a nice place for two nights, food, fuel and other costs for well under your budget. It is also a hell of a lot closer to home/OK than any ocean.

Check it out here.

We went a bit further to South Beach during New Years and the beaches and water were darn near as nice as Hawaii but with that being said I would recommend Durango or Colorado springs.
