Doesn't Keith Richards...at least with his humbucker tele...use 5 strings.

Without the low E string, he tunes this one to an open G, G D G B D.

I know he's know to have specific guitars for certain songs.

I swear I saw a photo of K.R. playing at the Gram Parsons tribute in California. He had what appeared to be a 10-string Martin, just like a 12-string acoustic but with 5 pairs, instead of 6.

Richards used alot of alternate and odd tunings same as Page, Beck, Clapton, etc. Those British guys all grew up on American Blues records, which used alot of open tunings for their slide playing.

Then stupid American kids like me grew up on their British hard rock. Music that was influenced heavily by the blues. Even I didnt like the blues much until recently. I was on the classical in lessons for years as a kid before I started listening to Euro metal bands as a teen. I didnt even play any blues scales back then but I played all of the 18th century modes with the scales, which came in handy a few years later when I started on electric guitar. I started mixing my neo-classical stuff with Euro metal after discovering Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc, and then started playing in metal bands. Im just now dropping all of the metal shredding stuff and finally embracing the blues more and in turn am finding myself coming full circle as a musician in the process. Which is kind of weird because one of my favorite instructors when I was in my teens 3o years ago is a blues legend down in Texas.

Yes ... one of the Teles (the one he calls Micawber) that has five strings. He probably has a boat load more. Which you are right, in open G one doesn't need the low E tuned to D. I tried that on one of my Teles and it just didn't feel right to me.

He had a great quote about his playing ... something to the effect that if you want to play like him, all you need is five strings, a thumb and an ____hole. I have heard versions of him saying similar like, "five strings, three chords and the body part".

Watched a BBC special some years ago with Keith talking about his playing. He had a nylon string acoustic across his knee and just ripped into something Carlos Montoya would have done. His reply was something like, "It's just a guitar, mate."

First concert I ever saw was the Rolling Stones at the Long Beach Arena in (I think) '72. Keith Richards and Mick Taylor ... they sure hooked me.

Nooo, we cant have goin without guitars, I cant even imagine what thats like. Im never more than a few feet away from a minimum of 2 guitars, I keep tons of em stashed pretty much every where I live and work. I get an idea for a song at the oddest moments then Im recording something and sending it to one of my bandmates. So easy to do today even with just a phone- I can even put a drum beat to it and effects via an app.

Besides guns, buying guitars is a sickness like no other I have ever known.

Guitars where Im sitting right now in my office- a Fender dreadnought and an Alvarez classical:

House fire. I'll get them back eventually I guess.

I'm sorry. One of my worst fears. Even though we're heavily insured money cant replace my guitars. Pictures and mementos are hard to lose too. But damn, guitars gone would suck. Heres hopin you get em back soon. Maybe we could jam some day. Get an OSA open jam session with all the musicians on the board.
