Picked up a 39-2 Smith and Wesson the other day for a really good deal, frame has one small area where the anodizing is gone, the trigger seems to be very nice, wood grip panels are like new, but the previous owner put cold blue all over the slide. The slide is the killer for any collectibility so why not get it hard chromed, lucky no pitting on the slide.

Who does chrome plating on firearms? I know APG does but is there any others? Any in Oklahoma?

Thanks

Don Williams at Action Works did a LW BHP for me. Not sure if he did it or sent it off, here's his number. 928-636-1691, who ever did it did top notch job.

Thanks guys. I will check the advised guys. I've always wanted a cool worked on gun, and I have the candidate. I stripped off the god awful cold bluing, block sanded to 2000 grit, then used some Flitz on a mesh 3x mesh cloth. I like the look but I don't want to be constantly getting rust off lol.

I've owned DLC, NP3, bearcote, Cerakote, and HC. To me they all work with reasonable care. NP3 is the best to me, Cerakote is what I find to be more economically friendly. YMMV.

Metaloy did my Greyson built gun IIRC.

Didn't you have issues with Metaloy on one of your aluminum frames? Seem to think we chatted once about how it works better on steel than alloy.

Yes, the alum frame is flaking underneath the grips on that LWT colt. Have yet to address it, don't want to give up that gun for that long lol. Next Greyson gun was done in NP3+ and it is the best finish for what I want. Doubt I'd spend that kind of money on a 3rd gen Smith though.

Just a couple technical details. Hard chrome can be applied to carbon or stainless steel, not aluminum. HC typically goes on 2-3/10,000 and runs Rockwell C70. It's quite durable. Can't do springs or aluminum triggers. I've found it to work best when applied as the initial finish. It's appearance mirrors the metal finish beneath it. It is rust resistant but not rust proof. HC is my favorite for cost effective hard use durability of steel guns.

Electroless nickel is pretty good, going on for a RC of about 50. A little more rust resistant than HC. Stripping EN off an existing gun takes a nasty toxic chemical bath.

Aluminum can be re-anodized some of the time, depending on the base aluminum. There are a couple types of aluminum; in terms spec decorative and mil-spec. If the aluminum is of the wrong spec for the process used things can go bad.

Cerakoting is reasonably durable and comes in lots of colors.

Other more exotic coatings out there including boron nitride, boron carbide and others.
