Initial log in for now but my friend's in China say periodic log-in will soon be required. The concern seems to be that DJI can in the future disable/track/severely limit the capabilities of your drone at will.
I can't see this as being good for their sales.
I am not sure having software that limits the places a drone can fly is a bad thing. I do not think drones should fly near airports military installations, prisons, over the border, sporting events, parades, and several other places such as your neighbors backyard.

This is the second time woot has offered this drone, but they do sell out fast.
Looks like a lower quality version of the phantom, The video right at the beginning has a lot of digitization. Unless it's in the 200 range or less I would just spring for a phantom vs getting something inferior You can often find a phantom that is refurbed for 250 to 300 on Newegg and probably used for that much or less on ebay.

Its an interesting model. It also has what I assume is the pre programmed no-fly areas they talk about and the beginner feature that I really like.
Back in the day, when playing with RC offroad vehicles, when the vehicle was running away from you the controls went one way, when coming at you, the controls went the other way.
This unit jrusling posted appears to eliminate that. Does the Phantom do that as well?

"Smart Mode: Designed for beginners, this mode uses GPS to establish a 26' "SAFE Circle" around the pilot. Stick relativity is maintained, meaning the aircraft will move in the same direction the stick is pressed is relative to the pilot, regardless of which way the quadcopter's actual "nose" is pointing. A "virtual barrier" imposes maximum radius of 300', help to ensure visual with the quadcopter is always maintained

Angle Mode: This mode is optimized for experienced pilots using the Q500+ Typhoon for aerial photography. It provides more control and steeper bank and pitch angles, helping open your work up to a greater variety of possible shots

Home Mode: This safety feature can be activated at any time with the simple flip of a switch on the ST10+. When activated, the Q500+ Typhoon will automatically return to its "home point" and land within a 10' circle of where it took off. If for whatever reason the transmitter signal is lost, Return Home will take over and fly the Q500+ Typhoon back to the home point until it lands or the signal is restored."

I can't watch video's on my home computer with the Sat service I have.

I bought the Phantom Standard model and now I am having issues figuring out how to connect the phone to the controller. The app sais to connect a USB cable from the controller to phone but there is no plug in on the controller. Maybe I loaded the wrong app? It says DJI

The Supreme Court has ruled they don't have to be registered, as of now.
Mine came with instructions to register it. $10 for hobby use and $15 for commercial use. I was going to make some extra cash doing real estate photos for a friend but then I read that I must take a test at FAA. A 2 hour test with 60 questions at a cost of $200? Screw that. It said failure to do so could lead to a $250k fine if caught. Just for photographing houses for cash? WTF?

A recent ruling. Your drone may have had that instruction sheet included before the ruling.
I don't have the exact text in front of me about the ruling, but I think they encourage registration but can't require it.
