I don't think it's heredity, so much as when you have one parent advocating the mantra of save and plan, while the other is advocating spend and borrow, the latter is the easier path. Certainly exercising self-restraint is more difficult, so it's much easier for kids to follow the self-serving short-term view.

Luckily my wife and I very strongly trying to instill better values in my son when it comes to finances than we were taught.

Exactly. There is an OSU monolith with surrounding landscaping at the exit to Sand Springs in Tulsa.
That had to cost a half million or so. WTF purpose does it serve? Perhaps OSU could have taken that money to do something constructive other than put that monolith there? Maybe a road sign that cost a couple thousand that would have got the same message across?

Much is spent on campuses these days to make them pretty and pleasant and empowering to those there to learn. I will admit, it does make for a nicer learning environment. But there is a limit, and also, to me, the ever-expanding role of colleges in the professional field(s) isn't necessary. It really pushes more people into crippling debt to start off their adult lives, and when you see some of the coursework they are forced to undertake, it is simply ridiculous. I could drone on for days about some of the things I see our current students in the healthcare fields having to do - total and absolute ******** busywork. I'm also convinced, especially in the nursing schools, that failing people out a couple of semesters because of said busywork is a financial decision on the part of the schools. Really sad to see. I know a number of folks who are/were serious students and very intelligent and hardworking people who were forced to repeat entire semesters or years because of some absolute ********. I'm not kidding, it really makes my blood boil, some of the **** I've seen...

The kids never knew our personal finances. That's why I jokingly said heredity.
I basically was the parent going to all the PtA, school, with no support from the other side.
I'm still in their life. She is not for the most part.

There has to be a reason why a person taught fiscal responsibility in their youth doesn't practice that later in life. It works for one, but not the other.
Its an interesting question, as the Ex wife was not financially responsible.

This is the single biggest deterrent I've found to going back to school. So much so that I'm tempted to not worry about getting a degree and just take the classes that interest me online, and use that knowledge for my own personal gain. It does help that I don't HAVE to have a job to support myself now. Still there is plenty I'd like to learn.

I dunno yet. But student loans are definitely off the table for me. I let myself get sucked into that once a LONG time ago. I swore once I got out from under them, never again. And I only borrowed about $20k ...

There are some wonderful online courses and programs, many of them free. Be sure to look https://www.coursera.org/ and https://www.udacity.com/ and https://www.edx.org/, but there are many others as well.

Some girls get scholarships. Some girls don't. Some girls have to take the hard way. They may take matters in their own hands. They may just lay there and take it. At least are willing to swallow the pride and instead of whining about priviledge.

If college is so expensive why do they get student loans...and then sell themselves? They need to reverse the issues...
But still, if Daddy knew what they were doing he'd raise cane.
