From the second paragraph of the Mississippi articles of secession "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world."

Slavery was a complicated issue that covered a lot of ground. But it was a key issue as it related to the southern economy and lifestyle none the less.

Just because it was a key issue doesn't mean it was the only issue. The current "history" books in public schools push it as the only issue.

I don't deny that nor was i speaking to it. I was commenting on what the statues say and the false narrative that they are part of. The civil war was complicated. But I don't believe it was a "just and holy cause" like is carved into many of the monuments.

And I was also responding so a specific statement that it "had very little to do with slavery". It did, and in several ways. Not just as the right to own another person (moral) but in economic ways, cultural ways, etc.

No, not quite. Lets say it was, do you know why? It had nothing to do with slavery itself, but everything to do with the amount of representatives the south had in Congress. 10 slaves equaled 1 person as far as population and the division of Congressional districts. Even with that, the South had no worthy representation in Congress,

The south, because of the small comparative population to the North, had little effective representation in Congress. Its what's happening in California now. The blue is the North and the South is red.

You read the rest of that article. The war was about an abundantly populated North having the numbers in congress to get their way.

perhaps we should/could. It'd be a heck of a debate. I'm not personally for it, but the idea that changing or removing a monument once built (or school named) is beyond debate is foolish.

But none of them lead an active rebellion and lost, so slaves aside, that seems like a good place to start.

And did Lincoln actually own any slaves?
Jefferson did, and we have a Jefferson school in town. Let's tear that sucker down!
